pummeled plug
What has happened so that twice now I've pulled #5 (223 I6) to find a bent sparkplug? Several weeks ago I had several seconds of terrible banging which wouldn't reproduce once it was towed to the shop. It seemed to run fine for the 250 miles in between bent plugs. It was also a good 250 miles after the banging before the plug started missing. A valve problem, I assume, but just what, oh e-Gurus?

I would suspect internal damage. A valve won't hit the plug unless it is broken off and bouncing around in there.
I would lay my money on a sloppy rod bearing or a broken piece of piston or something in there.
The only way to tell for sure is to scope it, or take the head off.

It could also be detonation. I have seen plugs that are completely chewed apart from this. Have the shop check your total timing when you talk to them to make sure that wasn't it if you find nothing else wrong. Most of the time you will find some type of internal damage like Banjopicker already said.
