I've wrestled with a problem since I got my 2005 F350. I could hear a faint tapping noise on the driver's side that became more rapid as RPM's went up. To make a long story short, I took it back to the dealer again two weeks ago and they replaced the high pressure oil pump due to a Ford document regarding interference between the pump and the pan cover. The noise is still there.
Does anyone else have a similar noise? Have you had your high pressure pump replaced for any reason.
Same situation with my '06, as I stated in previous threads, it increases with RPM's until it sounds like a salvation army bell ringer (only more annoying) at cruising speed. Tech confirmed noise, after 4 attempts to fix and over 60 days later Ford told me it was vibration from the HPOP and installed a kit but it did not resolve problem.
After sending out a Ford regional diesel guru who declared it was not a problem after all, so Ford will not fix under warranty, I have an attorney going after them for not honoring warranty.
Good luck fixing your problem
The noise in my '05 is not loud, but annoying and no one seems to be able to tell me what it is. When my dealer replaced the high pressure oil pump, it was either a shot in the dark on their part, or a way to bleed Ford for a few bucks.
The mechanic already had my truck torn down before I was told anything; I wouldn't have let them do the work if I'd known sooner. Based on what I've read regarding the HP oil pump problem, that is not the noise I have. Not only is the noise still there, but it seems louder; also, I now hear a faint whine that wasn't there before.
I'm sure there are competent diesel techs who understand the PSD 6.0, but I don't think my dealership has one. I bought this truck to pull a 15k pound 5th wheel I'm buying in the spring, but now I'm concerned whether it will hold together pulling such weight.
By the way, this is not the only problem I've had with this truck with only 16,000 miles on it: transmission trouble at 150 miles, front seal at 3,000 miles, another oil leak at 5,000 miles, rear seal is leaking. Oh how I long for a gasoline engine again.
When my truck started making the sound that you guys are hearing I took it in to the local dealer - they checked it out and basically told me that as long as the HPOP is working - supplying the proper oil pressure, the sound is "not unusual" for my year of engine. About a month later it died, would crank but no start ... the only symptom leading up to it dieing as far as I could tell was hard/long start times. It would take 5-6 seconds of cranking before it finally caught - even if the motor was warm.
Since the HPOP and o-rings have been replaced I don't have the funny noise or any starting issues - even tested it out by not plugging the truck in when it got down to upper 20's last week - started right up.
Usually a tapping noise back there isnt so much the hpop, its the fitting on the pump contacting the rear plate. There have been issues with that fitting failing so violently, that it blows a hole in the plate.
Metal Tapping Noise from Rear of Engine:
Excursions built after 1-10-05 and 2005/06 F-SuperDuty may have a metal tapping noise from the rear of the engine on decel or light acceleration, or under loads when the high oil pressure is at higher levels. This may be due to a damaged/improperly fitting HP oil pump output quick connect fitting. To diagnose, you will need a scan tool with active command capability. Command the IRP duty cycle to 45% and listen at the high pressure oil pump cover with a stethescope as the engine speed is increased to 2800 RPM. If the noise is louder on the pump cover than on other parts of the engine, the pump cover will need to come off to inspect and replace the fitting. Broadcast Message 5511.
