5.9 lier cummins vs. 6.4 liter ford
Hey all,
I have been driving Fords my entire life. I am on my 15th Ford right now. I have an opportunity to buy a 2006 Dodge 2500 with a 5.9 liter diesel. I drove it the other day and it didn't sem significantly different than the 6.0. I was going to order the 6.0 but was too late and missed my window to order a mid '07 rig. My quandry is should I wait for the 6.4 liter Ford for a substantial increase in price, or get this Dodge rig for much less right now? Don't know too much about the Dodge except the 5.9 has been their choice for years.
My inclination is to bite the bullet and wait for the 6.4.
Advice welcome.

I dont know why anyone who has owned 15 Ford trucks would even ask that question. Obviously you liked the product so far. After checking all the pictures and stats on the new truck I cant wait to get my hands on one. Will have to wait till my lease expires on my 2005 6.0. I,m not knocking the Dodge but I have a great deal of pride driving the Blue Oval.

Obviously you'd get two different answers depending on which website you ask this on; I'll try to give an un-biased opinion.
The cummins is a very reliable motor, probably much better than the 6.0 or 6.4 in terms of reliability alone. However, the Dodge trucks themselves leave a bit to be desired for.
So it comes down to what's more important to you - a really well designed chassis + a reasonably good motor, or a really good motor + an okay chassis.
Myself, I'd go with an 08+ Powerstroke if it's a work truck / cummuter truck where the power will likely to remain stock. If I'm looking to run 10's or do seldpulls every weekend, then I'd get the cummins.

I agree with RoyJ, it really is much more than just a motor question. Do you tow? Do you have a slide in camper? What do/will you use the truck for? I'm not going to bad mouth the Dodge, but depending on how heavy duty your truck needs are, the answer might be pretty obvious when you consider the whole package...

No question, to assume that the 6.4 will be as reliable as the Cummins would be a un-realistic assumption. I personally try to stay away from first years models of anything. Putting that motor into the Ford for the first time in production like that could be problems, but maybe not?? Go buy that Cummins and stay in this forum to see how the 6.4's do. The other thing with the newer diesel whether a 6.7 Cummins or a 6.4 PS is that when you want to soup them up I have heard with the new emmissions standards it will be quite difficult. I actaully am mentioning this based on a "Diesel Power magazine" article October 2006 page 12.....the name of the article is "Is this the end of the second musclecar Era?" If you read that you will definitely go with a 6.0 PS or 5.9 Cummins, I would not buy the newer motors if you are planning on air kit, exhaust and programming!! With the circumstances that you explained I hate to say it, but it's a no brainer to buy the Cummins if you cannot get a 6.0!! Either way let some other people be the guniea pigs on these new 2007 emmissions motors. THere is no telling the 6.7 Cummins could be problematic as well as the 6.4 PS and the Duracrap too! It is a ton of money to spend! Good luck!!
