Dodge Mega Cab Vrs. Ford Crew Cab

Just thought I would let you guys know what I thought of the 06 Dodge Mega cab cummapart I road in over the weekend. We drove about 1,000 miles round trip pulling four atvs, four people, and all our gear.

First off I didn't drive just road along but this is what I thought of the 06 dodge big horn 5.9 cummins with 80,000 on the clock:

1. Very bad ride
2. Lots of noise and vibration
3. Seemed to hunt for gears and had violent down shifts
4. Power wasn't anything to brag about
5. Interior seemed cheap (this was a big horn with leather and navigation)
6. Seats seemed to be made for people with big, heavy butts (big hard seats)
7. Fuel milage wasn't that great
8. Side of the trailer had soot on it from the truck blowing clouds of smoke every time it down shifted.

What I did like was the extra room in the back seat but it isn't worth putting up with all the other stuff.

I couldn't wait to get back in my 05 6.0 crew cab. This just made me fall in love with my ford all over again. I always thought a dodge 5.9 mega cab would be the ultimate truck but now I know better. Even with the 6.0 problems I have had I wouldn't trade it for a cummins.

Am I wrong in thinking that the Dodge Mega-Cab only comes in a short box? Seems like I read that somewhere.

For the sake of discussion, do you know if the truck is stock or has it been "modified" in some way? I'm sure the Dodge camp is just like this one...someone has figured all kinds of things you can do with the engine/chassis. At least mine doesn't soot the trailers I pull.

I think it was Diesel Power Magazine had an artical a couple of years ago ('06-'08) about a company that was putting long beds & extending the frames on mega-cab Dodges. I don't know the reasoning...but they did make mention of the fact at the time you couldn't get a long bed & mega-cab on the same chassis Things may have changed, I don't know. If I can remember to ask, there's two brothers at work that are die-hard Dodge owners...we usually have some interesting discussions.

Dodge or should I now say Fiat doesn't make a megacab longbed. In fact Dodge doesn't make a truck any more. It's now just Ram.

No mega-cab long beds but there are places that will do conversions. Having owned both a dodge and a ford the only thing I miss about the cummins is that it had way more low end power. Other than that my ford is better in pretty much every way

This mega cab was a short box and yes he did have it tuned. He was running a bully dog set one step below his "hottest" tune (I don't know much about bully dog tuners).

I just thought I would fall in love with it but as you can tell I wasn't impressed. I guess i do like the way they look...

Ahhhh...that's why the tranny was so sloppy on downshifts! The famous Bully Dog trans destroyer!

IMO, what sucks most about the Dodge Megacab, is the measly GVWR. Would you believe, 3500 SRW = 10,100# GVWR? That's only 100# more than an F250. It gets worse. A 3500 Dually = 10,500# GVWR. You only get 400# capacity increase with the duals. An F350 dually is right around 13,000.

I'm assuming the tuner would also explain the soot on the trailer.

the isb is great on the low end. but vs a 6.0 it the only place it wins. the 6.0 is the lincon of the truck world.

Bet he was running a striaght pipe out the back too! That seems to be the common thing around here with the Dodge boys; you can hear 'em coming for miles. I wish him the best with that Bully Dog...if it does anything to the tranny on a Dodge like what it does to the Ford's.

I wondered the same thing...though I've never ridden in a late model Dodge 2500/3500 (last one was a '98). So I wasn't sure. Those Dodge tranny's aren't that great to start with, I'd really cringe about putting anything on them...let alone a Bully Dog

I read an article several years ago in Diesel Power of a company that will make your mega cab into a long bed since Dodge doesn't make them. If I remember right, it was about 15K. They cut your frame in front of the axle, extend it to long bed lenght and add a long bed to it. Extend all assorted electrical, brakes, fuel and drive shaft. It makes a big truck, but it's still a ram-it dodge.

I saw a video on YouTube of a company who did the conversion and I can't recall the price but I remember it being surprisingly low for the work involved. Definitely less than 15k
