I've got a 1992 F150, 4.9 with an E4OD. It appears from the numbers that the transmission has been replaced once. It's a great work truck. I'm not cheap but putting $2000 into a transmission rebuild for a truck worth $2500 may not be the wisest option. It has developed the E4OD notorious "torque converter chatter"...a vibration when it's in third and overdrive doing around 30-50mph. My question is can I take care of the problem by replacing just the torque converter or are their other problems with this symptom that will require a more serious rebuild?
Sad story. I bought a used transmission, reported to be "just rebuilt" and put it in yesterday. It was complete garbage. So I've spent a good deal of money already and have a worse tranny than when I started. Cheap is not better so if I can't get by with a new torque converter I'll part out the truck or cough up the $2000. Any guidance?
