Best I can tell is the timing should be 8*BTDC with an idle of 800 RPMs,
Make sure the engine is warmed up before you adjust the timing.

This isn't just a straight answer thing or guessing.
People shouldn't be shooting out info without confirming the application
The timing setting depends on the SPECIFIC Calibration Code for the engine and is determined by several things about the truck.
Year of engine
Engine type
Transmission type
Axle ratio
Location of operation
The setting can be anywhere from 8*-12* BTDC
I have a book with 54 different calibrations codes for a 79-302.
The instruction in every specs book ever listed under timing setting says: See Engine Decal
In this case:
There wasn't enough info provided to determine EXACTLY what the timing setting should be. "Yet there IS a chance" that it is 8* BTDC"
Tell me more about the truck,
Are there any stickers on the valve covers ?
One sticker has the identification code for the PROPER engine specs.
Please post that info and I can tell exactly what you need to know instead of going by ........a guess or assumption.
EDIT:
The information from the other poster is more than likely wrong.
For a 78 302 .....There are 2 calibration codes depending on transmission type.
8-53G-R0
8-54G-R0
One trans is 6*
the other trans is *8
The timing setting RPM is 550 .
I need the calibration number for the 79 302 as there are more possiblities than the 78.
