Oil Consumption Excessive?

Does anyone know what is excessive oil consumption on these 7.3's? I have a 01 and consumes 2 quarts every 3000 miles using Delo products and have a friend that only gets 1000 miles. I wasnt too worried about mine but his seems to excessive for my liking. My engine has 90 K on it. Not sure about his. And the other question is at that point of it using oil (add mark) is the oil breaking down and should it be changed or put 2 qts in her and keep driving till 5000 mi.?

I would be a little worried. If your truck still has warranty take it in.

How hard do you work it? Under heavy loads it would burn a little oil.

My truck doesnt burn a drop, and even after 5k the oil is still a nice honey color.

I have same engine and it is only used for light duty and sometimes a travel trailer. It did not use any oil for 125k miles and now has moved to about 1 qt. per 1000 miles. I can not see any leaks. I have noticed the blow by to the crankcase is worse than it used to be. It seems to be puffing when the oil fill cap is removed. This is not a real problem for me, but I wonder if it is leading to something worse. JDS549

If it is o-rings, will it cause further problems or is the cost of oil the only thing? Another question, what is the general expection of life for this motor. JDS549

Mine used to burn around 2 quarts every 5000 and I was told it was normal. Then one day when sitting in traffic I noticed a burnt oil smell. Upon further inspection I had a leak from the back of the turbo and was burning on the back of the engine, therefore I never noticed any drips. (in hindsight I would have looked a little harder before assuming it was normal.) Anyways, all is tight now and with 140,000 miles on her it does not use a drop. Just my 2 cents worth.
