Help. Grinding Noise

Ok heres the problem, after I have been on the interstate about 20 minutes when I go to turn to the right I get a major grinding noise, this only happens when I turn to the right, it can feel it through the transfer case, it sounds like it is coming from a right front wheel bearing but I have no play and it does not do it while going straight or turning left. It does do it when I use the brakes after coming off the highway, it does not do it using the brakes in normal stop and go driving. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Are the axles locked or free? I'm guessing it is in the 4WD system since you can feel it through the t-case. IF you have auto hubs, one of them could be stuck. Jack up the front and spin the wheels while looking at the axle u-joints to be sure they are unlocked. The auto hubs are problematic (junk) IMO.

Maybe the caliper slide pins on the right are sticking too. Does the noise happen only under braking?

Ok I got under the truck and spun the axles on the front the spun freely, it has the manual hubs. It does this when I turn to the right and it also does this under hard braking, I also noticed it when I put it into reverse and gave it some gas while backing out at the Circle K this morning. I could not get it to do it while I braked or turned hard in both directions this morning, only when I put it in reverse. I did not notice any bolts out or broken under the tranfer case or the crossmember. I also thought it was from the 4 X 4 system and it very well may be. Last night I put the truck in 4low and crawled up this rock incline by my house, I then unlocked hubs and put in neutral shifted truck back into 2wd. I am having problems with the column gear shifter lots of play and sometimes will not go all the way into park, could this have something to do with this grinding. Thanks for the suggestions hopefully I will figure this out, I am supposed to head for Vegas and my sons football tournament on Wed and I am sketched on driving my only mode of transportation.

I don't think the shift lever would cause a grinding noise but you never know. I would get that fixed soon anyway, it may leave you stranded if it breaks. Sometimes it just comes off the mount under the dash but more likely it's broken. The tranny relies on the electrical signal sent to the PCM through the gear selector sensor on the side of the tranny.

check under the colum for loose bolts and nuts, I had some that were loose and were giving me fits. Hope it helps. Just a thought, check and see how much room is between your DP and firewall. The reason I say this is because mine made a grinding sound in reverse only and only when going up an incline in reverse, ie backing into my inclined driveway. It turned out to be my leafs up front were a little weak (i know hard to believe) and on an incline the truck would shift its weight just enough to cause the DP to hit my firewall and it sounded like the transfer was the culprit. I won't tell you the painstaking efforts it took to figure this out (lying under the truck, riding on the front with the hood open all the while my wife backed the truck up the driveway...her driving scares me as it is!!!) Alot depends on how the truck was set on the frame at the factory and a bunch of other crap, I fixed it by putting in a bigger DP and doing a reverse shackle with new leafs and an add a leaf.

Now that is what I am talking about, Down Pipe is the culprit, I have tired leaf springs and the dual Kings need to be rebuilt, I am positive it is the downpipe. Man that is very cool you thought of sharing this with me, I would buy you a 12 pack if you were close. Dont you love it when you realize it is not going to cost you 3 grand to fix something when you have no idea what to fix. I do have one more question, I noticed the leaf springs on the front are all not perfectly straight, slightly out of line, do I need to straighten these out or will I get by with them as is. Thanks Alot to all those who replied, this forum rocks....

I have the same noise on my 2WD F350. It has coil springs. So do you think they should be replaced? I took it to the dealer mechanic and they could not determine the problem.
