my oil pressure gauge on my 1990 f250 302 reads normal then after awhileor maybe after it heats up drops below the red line. there are no changes in engine speed or sound. after when i step on the gas the needle goes to nomal again and as the revs slow back down so does the oil gauge. any ideas thanks
Hey guys I am having the same problem on my 1990 F150 I just bought, same engine, about 120,000 miles. After the engines been running a while when you come to a stop the oil pressure drops below the red line, but it sounds like its idling ok. When you accelerate the oil pressure picks up again and looks normal. Only a slighly noticable knock that you can hear outside with the hood open revving it by hand. I am worried and I too would greatly appreciate some input on this problem! Thanks in advance!

Normally I would think that your guage is telling you that your bearings are shot and the motor is unable to hold pressure at hot idle. This is a real quantum leap though if you can't verify the readings with an actual oil pressure guage (the factory unit is just an off/on switch set @ 7lbs - you knew that, right?). I would probably suggest that y'all having this probelm should plug in an actual oil pressure guage, even if just temporary, and see exactly what your pressure is at hot idle. Post back with your readings and diagnosis/troubleshooting can continue. It could be a plugged up pickup screen, weak oil pressure pump, worn bearings, blocked oil galleys, etc. etc.
lost cause for now im burning radiator fluid bad i broke one of the lower intake manifold bolts. i dont know if that is enough to account for all the white continuous smoke but im not taking every thing apart and replaceing the lower intake and upper intake gaskets for a while . there are other little problems too lik it not having any driving power and i dont trust the brakes etc etc just sic of working on it and it already cost me over 800 and 40 hrs of hard work.also i replaced the crank bearings but i should ve done the mains too but i had now money for that too
this all sounds like bad news.starting to think like i got a bum deal on a used truck. thanks for the input, i guess ill try a real oil pressure guage first.
I just took mine in for my mechanic to check out. He said the engine sounds great and he heard no knocks. There are no other engine problems or anything, no knocking or smoke, just the pressure. He thinks it's just a clogged oil screen. He wants to replace the oil pump with a high pressure one and clean/replace the screen. I'll know the final diagnosis early next week and I'll post the outcome.
hi volume may suck too much oil and empty the oil pan before it gets a chance to refill from the already pumped oil thoughout the engine. use a regular pump.
