I have been having the same problem and pretty sure its the bearings need replaced. I was at wallyworld today and they had oil pressure gauges on clearance for $5 so I bought one. I'm going to get it in this weekend.
Ford trucks in these years don't really have an oil pressure guage. It's just an indicator, the sender is just a switch. When you have over 3 psi it closes and puts 12v to the guage, which has a 20 ohm resistor on it to make the guage go to mid scale or thereabouts. There was a thread on this in the Ranger forum a couple of years ago. You can put a Ranger ('84) sender on the truck and jump out the resistor on the back of the instrument panel on the oil guage and then you will have a working pressure guage. I did this on my 90 F-150.
i do hear slight knock when i give it some gas, however i have to be outside the truck with the hood up.let me know how you made out.i parked mine to wait for nicer weather to work on it.
Got the truck back today. The new oil pump did not solve the oil pressure problem. Mechanic said that my only other choice is to replace the engine, which I am not sure I am willing to do, given that this thing has 120k on it and has been used for towing, I figure the transmission is likely the next thing to go. At least my mechanic split the cost of the repair with me so it only cost me $400 instead of the $800 I was originally quoted.
haha, WOW! About the samething as my 89 F150, 302. The damn gauge is all over the place. Mine doesn't care if it is warm or cold. It just stops working. Maybe I'll start with the sending unit.
I too just bought this truck. I'm kinda thinking I got a bum deal as well. Word of the wise, don't buy a truck on a dark snowy night. Please check it out on a lift!!! I found that my frame had be broken or snapped and fixed from a hillbilly welder.

That sucks, dude. I got burned too. This damn truck sounded fine and felt solid as hell. I didn't find out about the oil pressure problem unil after I bought it and had driven it a while. My lesson learned is always take a used vehicle to a mechanic before deciding to buy.
