I'm installing guages in my buddies truck, and I don't want his pyro hot all the time. . .. where is a good ignitionwire to tap into? How about parking light wire also? There are those four customer access wires in the lomb going to the computer somewhere ont he drivers side in the engine compartment. THey are white, black, blue and red. What are those for? Thanks
Tim
I believe they are the wires through the firewall for the brake option on a tow package. However it seems most harnesses have them, whether or not stuff is there to hook up to. VTVM out the red, which should be trailer hot, but all the time on to see if it is indeed powered.
black is signal ground, white is ( i think) brake light input blue is going to trailer brake
I'm not sure what VTVM is. Are you saying that Red is hot? and then I should just ground to the frame somewhere? Where is everybody else wiring their guages into the ignition?
Tim
Vacuum Tube Voltmeter a really cool tester from the 50's for measuring electrical things
Red will be hot all the time if it is hooked up. there are also some "accessory" fuse positions in the fuse box by your left kneecap that are switched, and some that are live all the time. there should be a couple of empties just showing pins. Hook up to one of those pins using a test light to see which one is the one you want.
The customer access wires under the hood are not connected to anything on either end. They are used to make connections from wires added in the engine comparment to inside the cab. I found the other end to be to the right of fuse panel opening close to where the trailer harness plug was located near the center of the dash. I found a 4 pin round connecter to the right of the panel opening and used the red wire with yellow tracer for the keyed hot wire. Gauge light wiring can be made at the light blue wire with red tracer in the brown 6 wire connector to the right and below the steering column.
