This is from the ever unreliable Haynes manual that covers the F150 - F350 and Bronco Gas Engines from 1980 - 1996.
1. In the engine compartment, locate the resitor on the heater or evaporator housing.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. (this I would do first)
3. Disconnect the resistor electrical connector.
4. Remove the resistor screws and remove the resistor from the housing.
5. Installation is reverse of removal. (duh)
The Blower in my 93 has only 2 speeds, Off, High. It's not the switch, replaced that already. Bought this truck in May w/ 253,000 miles and turned 259,000 tonight. No manuals or any books at all. The question I have is where is there another place to check for possible problems.
I would think the resistors would limit the speed. Only other place I can think of would be wiring somewhere between the switch that you replaced and the resistors.
The only wiring diagram in the unreliable Haynes manual I can find with the resistor, blower motor and switch is for a 1981 ... but it is probably the same. Off ... well is OFF, High speed does not get any resistance, the low and medium speeds for the fan motor are where the resistor comes into play. So I would check that the resistor is good first and then wiring between the switch and resistor. Motor has two wires according to diagram ... ground and one coming off the resistor. This diagram shows the High Side of the resistor is furthest from the grounded side, low next to ground and then medium between the high and low.
I would think it sits inside a hole on the housing .... I know that is the way it was for my 73 Mach1, but inside under dash ... I guess that's to be in the airpath for cooling purposes.
Went to the Ford House and got the part for the fan + a diagram of the location of the resistor , it's not an easy spot but I'll get it done. That little sucker cost me $20.00!
Well I found out why I did not have all 3 fan speeds, connector had a wire burned out! Went and put female spade clips on the resistor connector tabs. Now I got all3 speeds!
Regular crimp connectors will burn up rapidly. To make a permanent repair you need high temp spade terminals available from appliance repair stores. They use them for connecting to heating elements.
