My 2002 F350 7.3 diesel worked fairly well until it started getting cold out. Soon as it got cold, the engine stalls when i start it. Stalls out if I try to go anywhere before it is warm and to restart it cranks for around a minute before it starts slowly. Engine runs then acts like it looses all fuel and slowly shuts off. I have the edge chip that i disconnected and the problem still persists. New batteries in Sept. Fuel filter in spring. Mechanic tried to fix it and changed a wiring harness and no fix. New Glow plug relay from mechanic recently as well. Problem still not fixed. Iput fuel conditioner in it. Fuel injector cleaner with water stabilizer. I am stumped..............once it does warm up it runs good and starts slower........10 sec crank. Please help i am running out of options.
Welcome to FTE. First off tell us what you consider cold. Next what oil is in your engine, when was the last time it was changed, and is it full right now? Your fuel injectors run off of engine oil, and cold thick oil may have something to do with your problem.
Do you have a CEL (check engine light) Did the mechanic pull any codes? If so what were they? Any way you can tell us exactly which harness he replaced so we can try and guess what he was thinking the problem was?
it still sound like a filter problem. if not then, check oil level. could be seals on the high pressure oil pump solenoid. pull the valve and check the seals. you mechanic will hopefully know what where this is.
check the fuel pressure, you can install a gauge in the back of the fuel bowl, you should see around 65psi.
is there any difference in the smoke when she dies.
cold is below 0 celsius. Did the oil in the summer. No oil leaks anywhere. he hooked it up to his comp and it said low fuel pressure. No cel comes on. Went to check oil type an dcouldnt find oil can,....checked to see if oil was runny on dipstick and the dip stick showed no oil. Like i said it leaks no where onto the ground anyhow. I topped off the oil about 1000kms ago.
No oil on the dipstick means your at least a gallon low. Fill the oil back up and see if that helps things. Then grab a flashlight and inspect the valley (top of motor between the heads). Look down in there and see if you can find any puddles of oil on top of the motor.
Have you had any other symptoms when it is running? Is there any signs of oil in the bottom of the fuel bowl, degas bottle on the radiator, in the tail pipe?
Edit: How many kilometers ago was the summer oil change?
summer oil change was around 10000 kms ago. no visible leaks on engine, seems to be missing when it is running.......obvious miss when u listen to the exhaust. Feels like cylinders missing when you drive too.
What type of oil do you typically use & what weight? Low oil can cause it to run poorly too. Also, extended oil change intervals can cause the poppets inside the injectors to stick (especially on a cold engine), so staying on top of your oil changes is important. You might try switching to a 5w-40 synthetic oil to see if that helps you.
do a complete oil and filter change now, dont worry about the synthetic cause you should do another change soon. yes two. by the sounds of it youve at the least gummed your engine. very bad. also im just guessing but i d say you need an air filter.
run the truck untill as hot as you can get it then do the oil change, dont burn yourself. there is a check valve in the high pressure oilpump gallery that doesnt like old oil either. you can check to see if its leaking by filling the resivor (there is a small plug next to the oil pressure sensor). quickly putting the plug all the way back in and trying to start the truck.
you need maintanence, and that may not be the problem.
10000 kms isnt a ton, but if its poor quality oil then its way over.

Reason: opps
Engine lubrication for severe service operation
The following severe service operating conditions require unique engine
maintenance procedures:
² towing a trailer over 1 600 km (1 000 miles)
² sustained, high speed driving at Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
(maximum loaded weight for vehicle operation during hot
weather-above 32°C [90°F]).
² frequent or extended idling (over 10 minutes per hour of normal
driving).
² operating in severe dust conditions.
² frequent, short trips of 16 km (10 miles) or less during freezing
weather
If you are operating your vehicle under any of these conditions, observe
the following service procedures:
² Change engine oil and filter every 5 000 km (3 000 miles).
² Use Motorcraft oil or an equivalent oil conforming to Ford
Specification ESR-M2C171–C or API categories CG-4/SH. Do not use
oils labeled with only one of the following category designations, SG,
SH, CE, CF-4 or CG-4, as they could cause engine damage.
For more information refer the Severe Duty Maintenance Schedule in
the “Service Guide”.
recomended oil for cold is
10w30 preferred
or 5w30 for real cold.
youd be fine with 10w30, its not that much more to go with a semisynthetic.
