Very odd..

I am getting a weird noise from under my truck, near the tranny. It sounds like a metal, squeeky, rattley noise.... I have an auto,c6 tranny.
It makes this noise once I start to drive, and it seems to go away after I get going around 40. It also completely disapears once Ive been driving around for awhile. I let my truck totally warm up before driving, (built 390).

What could this be? It has plenty of tranny fluid...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Crawl under it and check the U-joints.

Block the wheels, put her in neutral. or tranfercase in neutral as well if so equipped. crawl under and shake wiggle and roll. We call it SWR the drive-shaft should be no play in the u joints.
grease them while you are under there and the might go away long enough to get to Nappa.

So you guys think its the U-joints then? Why would the noise stop after driving around for awhile?

Thanks.

That im not sure about. The tranny was built by a reputable place locally, and has a shift kit. Im assuming it has its share of miles on it... It almost seems as if the noise only starts up in second gear.. But I cant figure out why it would stop after being driven around for awhile.. I mean, the noise completely stops.

Check and see if you have a two piece driveshaft in the rear, between the two of them there is whats called a carrier bearing and when mine went out it made the same noise at low speeds. Replaced it and it went away so Id check that if you have a two piece driveshaft.

Thanks again guys!

The driveshaft is one piece.

About taking it back to the tranny shop:

I bought this truck recently, the tranny was not *just* done. The previous owner did a bunch of work on it throughout like 5 years, while rarely driving it. I took it to the tranny shop that built it, and luckily they remembered the truck. He said that as long as its shifting\going into gear nice and tight, its fine. Also, as I said that the noise goes away after driving for a little while, by the time I got to his shop it wasnt making the noise anymore. it only makes this noise for about the first few miles after taking off. After about 10-40mins max of driving, the noise is gone..

IM CONFUSED!!!

Sounds like a dry, squeaky u-joint to me. See if they might have a grease fitting on them, If so, grease them and see if it goes away.
