Hey guys, I have just purchased a 78 f250 supercab, only problem is the the trans is toast, I was told the motor is a 351 any idea what auto trans I have??, and what years of what vehicle can I get a replacement from??
get your C6 rebuilt IMO don't take the chance with scrap yard parts A guy around here does em for $400 including parts. He does this on the side but he's an AAMCO mechanic full time. That's my $.02
besides the NSS then could I run ANY 78-84 C6, I will just jumper the NSS, I need to get this together and the wreckers out here has transmisions on for $75 cdn right now
Any c-6 won't do the trick. You will need one for a 351M or 400. The rest of them will not work without changing cases, output shafts, and probably other stuff that I'm not remembering right now. I'd get the right one and a good one if I were you. I'm not sure that spending less on a transmission than on a full tank of gas is money well spent. But, hey it could work out ok. Perhaps you'll win the jackpot and find a performance B&W c-6 in through you search. But more likely, you may just find one that has been rebuilt somewhat recently and that would be a great find if you ask me. Just a note: They are heavy pigs and the job, while not hard, is not really much fun and something even less fun to do twice in a short amount of time. Be sure to get a good one.
See post #2 and Mil1ion says it must be a 78-9 for proper NSS mounting.
if you look at my last post above, I am not to worried about the nss but I wanted to know if the tranny mount and such is the same between the car and truck cases
If you get a c-6 from anything other than big block (351M, 400, 429, or 460) it will not bolt up to the engine. Other than that, they are roughly the same. Cars have different tail shaft lengths that you can change if you have the right tools. Two wheel drive pickups do too. With some work they can fit in your pickup if you take the tailshaft housing off and change the tailshaft. A 4x4 c-6 from a big block will work very nicely with no modifications if you are willing to bypass the NSS. Really, unless you have experience with automatics this is your only option. If you go outside of that you are in for some tranny work. You CAN make any c-6 work that you buy since you have a big block case sitting in your truck right now - all you have to do is swap out everything in the "new" tranny put it into your case. Easier said than done I know. But, if you are going to attempt that, you may as well rebuild it while you are in there. Good luck to you. PS: If your truck is 2 wheel drive, you have more options - I assumed in my response that it is a 4x4.
I'd stay clear of the fmx... they're no where hear as strong or dependable as the c-6. Also many of 2wd truck transmissions had an attached yoke where the cars had a slip spline. you can make a car trans work but it will take more than you might be wanting to do
Since your truck is two wheel drive you can use just about any c-6s (excluding most 4x4 cases) if you are willing to bypass the NSS and are willing to modify the driveshaft. You can use a c-6 from the multitude of cars that ford produced. Just about any 460 case will work, as will 429 cases, 400 cases, and 351M cases. The thing that you have to be careful of is the length. A c-6 that is longer than the one you have will require shortening the shaft. One too short and you will have to lengthen it. If you don't want to mess with this, put one into you truck that is the same length as the one that you have. Otherwise, you are going to have to lengthen or shorten your driveshaft and that is going to cost some. Note: Lengthening shafts cost at least twice as much as shortening them because they have to use a whole new tube for the shaft. Check your local driveline shop if you wonder how much they cost. Best bet: get one that came from a pickup or car that has the same length tranmission as yours and the big block bell housing. It will fit nicely. The FMX is a light duty transmission and I don't know that they ever made one to fit a big block.
