John
ok so I went and got a new CPS and put it in
used some ether and got it to start
it runs fine once started but will not restart unless it gets a shot of ether
help I need some ideas of what to check
JOHN
How about a torn O-ring in the IPR? (Injection Pressure Regulator)
Or a weak HPOP.
How many miles on your oil change? Believe it or not it makes a difference. These engine rely on the engine oil to drive the injectors and old worn out oil will make them stall.
You might have got air in the hp oil system while doing all of that cranking. Run it at wide open throttle for about 2 minutes then shut it down and see how it restarts.
WE DID DO THE ICP EARLIER TODAY WITH NO CHANGE
BUT NOT SINCE IT RAN AND THEN STARTED TO DIE
WE DID TAKE IT TO A PARTS STORE TO HAVE THE CODE READ BUT THEY SAID IT PASSED.
i WILL TEST THE ITEMS MENTIONED AND WILL CHANGE THE OIL
i DO NOT KNOW HOW OLD THE OIL IS AS i BOUGHT THE TRUCK AND THEN DROVE IT 200 MILES AND THEN ALL OF THIS STARTED.
WILL GET BACK AT IT IN THE MORNING. tHANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL OF THE RESPONSES SO FAR
jOHN
Im having similar problems.. My 2000 psd once warm has no problem starting back up.. But im living up in canada and the time gets down to -15 regularly.. its happend twice now that the truck will crank over fine, but wont start.. i used ether once and it worked.. but this time it didnt.. so i left the truck plugged in overnight tonight, im hoping that it will fire up tommorow morning. but if not ill have to check the cps..
I've got a brand new fuel pump, oil was just changed a month ago (little over 1000 km on the oil).. All my buddies at work with their dodge diesels seem to have no problem with the cold starts.. so im taking some hard hits for ford here.. seriously thinking about gettin rid of the old ford for a new dodge...

Two times your Ford diesel won't start in cold weather and you're thinking of dumping it for a Dodge? I'm sure if the Dodge boys felt that way they'd all be driving Fords now. #1 Ether is a big NO on anything that has automatic glow plugs unless you want to see your whole intake system blown to bits or your starter turned into a twisted pile of scrap. #2 If you're living somewhere where it gets really cold, plugging in your truck just makes good sense. #3 Maintenance is always a good idea, have you had the glow plugs checked out? If you'd like to check them yourself, just ask and somebody will let you know how, maybe even me . What kind of condition are the batteries in? The starter? Do you use fuel conditioner to prevent your fuel from gelling? Lighter weight oil for colder months? Your truck is 7-8 years old now, probably wouldn't hurt to put some money into it, I'm sure your Dodge buddies have if their trucks are that old.
yah.. I finally got it started.. i have 2 new optima batteries. both with battery blankets.. block heater is working.. starter is good.. oil is 0w40 synthetic and i changed it about a month ago.. the truck is normally great for starting... but this year the cold seems to be taking its toll.. anyway.. i wouldnt never switch to dodge.. i was just frustrated.. it can be very stressful when your mode of transport isnt working.. soo maybe its just time to upgrade to a newer model as my truck has about 330 000 km on it.. im not sure what the normal life of a powerstroke engine is? its very well taken care of.. with the exception of the odd ether blast ...
Are you saying the batteries fixed the problem? Just want to be sure that is what you say fixed it.
BTW, 330K km is nothing for these engines as long as they are maintained. Kennedyford has about 500k miles on his rig although he has had to work on it.
