pulley squeek ?

I have an '05 f350 sd 4x2 with the v10. i have 4300 miles on it and a few weeks ago i noticed a high pitched squeek coming from the belt, so i used belt dressing on it and it went away, but 2 days ago it came back, no amount of belt dressing is making it go away this time. I think i have narrowed it down to the tensioner on the lower right of the belt assembly. I heard the bearings go quickly on this setup. still under warranty so have an appointment next week at the stealership, but anyone else with this problem?

I have the same issue on my 2004 5.4 with 33000 miles. Take belt off, no squeak. Seams to be coming from idler or water pump. I will be taking to dealer before 36000 miles. Philip.

If it is a squeaking noise that goes away with spray or dressing it is likely just the belt.

Belts can need replacement as early as you rs. First, I hate belt dressing. Temporarilly it helps but it just makes things worse in the long run. I find this to be most true with serpentine belts. V belts appear to be less prone to belt dressing problems.

With a serpentine, the better fix is to thoroughly clean the belt to remove the gummy residue of the dressing. I use a rag with rubbing alcohol and wipe until the belt is clean. The belt has to be off to do this properly. Next I clean all the pulley surfaces so there is no residue. Then I rough up the shiney/smooth pully surfaces with some coarse sand paper. THis usually fixes the problem unless the belt itself is glazed, ie has a shiney smooth appearance. If the belt is glazed I use a new one and toss the old one in the trunk as a "road emergcency" spare.

If it is a pulley, sometimes you can find a replacement bearing. Bearings are easy to replace if you have a puller, they are relatively cheap. If you can't find a proper bearing, you may have to spring for the entire pulley assembly(seems Ford doesn't like to sell components) and this can get expensive, upwards of $100.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
