Just an idea, On my wifes Passat I used red led bulbs. They look great. On my X I left the stock lights in but traced the light pigtail pattern in the upper part of the light, cut it out with a Dremel and wired up another pair of bulbs. This would also look good in clear.
no don't do that, i did it on mine and the factory bulbs on the top location melted the housing in less that 2 days. get the led red bulbs for the top if you do it. check my gallery, i have pics of a 4" round tractor trailer led light that was cut into the factory housing and the red led factory bulb moved to the top location. all my lights were swapped to led's. oh, if you do led's in the rear, you will need a resistor to slow down the blinker speed. because the led's draw so little power, the truck thinks that a bulb is out and blinks fast.
I have had my tail lites done for over 6 months with no problem yet. I did the full led lites in my wifes Passat. You can't change the flasher so I had to use resistors. On the X I already changed the flasher. I used the motorized flasher from one of my Pete's. There not load sensitive to about 30 amps. There small and fit almost anywhere.
