How can I tell what kinda diff I have in my 02 ford explorer limited? I think it is failing, and need to know how to figure out what kind to order. Also how do I tell if I have limited slip? I changed the oil about a month ago and didn't put any additive in the diff. I also had a flat tire on the hiway and my spare was a different size(bigger) and when I drove my truck would jerk, would this have caused a failure in the diff?
Look at your receiver hitch. If it's 1-1/4" with a 4-pin electrical connector, you've got 3.55 rear gears; if it's 2" with a 7-pin connector you've got the 3.73 LS.
driving with two different size tires is not a real big thing. driving a limit slip differential with out the friction modifier is not a good idea. if you had two different size tires, and the differential is constantly rotating due to the different sizes, AND you have a LS rear end witihout the addative, then you have a problem. The clutches surely took a beating. if it is salvagable by adding the oil now, or needs rebuilt, is hard to say. How does it act now???
I have the 3.73ls rear end, it just make a noise at a consistant turn/curve. Can I add the additive now, or should I change the fluild again and add it to the oil? How hard is it to change the Diff? does it take along time?
there is a big drain plug like 1 inch and a small fill plug about 1/2 inch pipe above and front side of the differential. i would go to Auto Zone and get a tube of the friction modifier and just add to the present oil and see what happens.
