Rough Idle

Hey all. I have a '93 f-250 7.3 non-t with 276,000. I have and have had a rough idle problem. My local shop said that the timing is spot on and that he suspects the rockers. Any ideas?

use a double dose of diesel kleen or some fuel additive and try to get the injectors cleaned that way. have you ever had the injectors replaced in those miles. is there any fuel leaking at the injectors or anywhere else? have you changed the filter ? could be the rockers but they will cause other problems too.
short out the injectors one at a time and see if there any change in the idle. if no change, that particular cylinder is the culprit that may need a new injector.

that makes more sense because all you need to do is relieve the line pressure

you say loosen the line nut i say short out the injectors. before you start the engine, make sure each one is broken loose so you dont get tangled up in moving parts. then just snug each one back up so you need a wrench to loosen them. You should notice a difference in the idle with each one, the one that makes the lease difference is a problem. or the beginning of the problem. you will find one injector with an additional extension on it, you will need 2 wrenches to loosen that one.

Ya know, I have this problem too. Idle is just a little "lumpy"...

I cracked all 8 of my injector lines and every one of them seemed to make a BIG difference.

Anybody got any other suggestions?

the problem i had with mine when it idled ruff was the main fuel lines that run from the tank to the tank selector valve i think the little connectors on the end of the lines tend to suck air.

If it was sucking air, wouldn't it blow white smoke - and maybe be hard starting to boot?

Bilder12, I use DK every tank. I have the fuel filter changed every 15,000. I have had 2 injectors replaced during that time. I had the rough idle before and after that. The only other problem that I have ever had with the motor is glow plugs. Does not leak any fuel nor does it blow smoke. Under normal driving anyway. Three dealerships have said that it was the age of the motor and to not worry about. I am not worried about it. I don't like it. These same dealerships told me that there was nothing wrong with my crappy E4OD either. They were wrong.

Which fuel lines - the rubber ones between the injector caps (return lines), or the steel ones between the injectors and the pump (supply lines)?
