Timing made it worse?

My truck has a boatload of problems, one of the being that it runs VERY poorly, no power, and terrible gas mileage. Well the suggestion was to adjust the timing. OK. So my dad and I adjusted the timing, which is a great thing because it was at 18deg BTDC. Well we adjusted it to 10deg BTDC and it ran great with the spout disconnected (what we are pretty sure was the spout) but then over the last week it has started running TERRIBLE. Not only does the engine run terrible now, the transmission has started acting up agian, the same as before I changed the MLPS (that solved the problem)

Threads about my problems :
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...eak-460-a.html
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...-problems.html

So... what did we do? I have stretched my knowledge to the limit.

HELP!? I don't know what more to ask, what more to tell, and I have stretched my mechanical knowledge to the limit.

I appreciate the help. -myers

If it wasn't pinging at 18 degrees, I'd put it back there. It's possible that the timing marks moved and that was the correct place. To a point, the more advanced you can run without pinging/detonation, the better performance and fuel mileage you will achieve. If the timing is too retarded, performance and fuel economy will suffer drastically.

The SPOUT connector should be in the wiring on the drivers side fender near the ignition module (the small thing with a heatsink around it).

Okay, here's a few things that WEREN'T mentioned in the other posts. Catalytic converters, are they still there? If so unbolt the exhaust from the manifolds (don't remove the manifolds from the heads) and drive it around the block.. It's going to be LOUD so do it at like noon on a wednesday when everyone is at work. If you have a marked improvement in power you've found your problem. Spark plugs, what brand, how old, and were they gapped properly before installation? Then what about the TFI? It's what controls the timing. If it's starting to go it can cause these problems, in '94 it should be on the drivers side fenderwell, or drivers side of the firewall (bulkhead).

a quieter way to test for clogged exhaust is by using a vacuum gauge.

I have some questions:
1. What size engine was in it before you put in the new 460?
2. If it was not a 460 and you seem to hint it was not what did you do about the wiring and the PCM?
3. Did you fix the transmission or is it still bad?
4. Is the transmission a 94 or a 96?

The cat is still there, though not really. We knocked the insides out, before everyone goes legal on me, where I live there are NO smog provisions.

Spark Plugs are Bosch Platinum II's, about 1month old, took them out of the box and put them in. (ran great after I installed these)

Don't know anything about TFI

subford
Always been a 460 (sorry to alude otherwise, probably from the fact that the old 460 was VERY shot, no oil pressure, no power, the heads have oil burnt and caked almost an inch deep. but this rebuilt engine has no more power... it's a little better, noticeable, but not what I (we) expected from a 460)

trans was a recent rebuild, and was installed when rebuilt engine was put in. (both came from a truck that was wrecked that had no problems prior to wreck, wreck was a VERY minor one)

Both engine and trans are a 96, wire harness and pcm(i think) were both taken from the 96 and installed with engine and tranny.

Thanks so much for the questions so far, I hope that they provide the info you need!

Will reset computer while im replacing plugs on wednesday.

How would I check the ground?

check ground by unbolting them and cleaning and making sure no corrosion.

during engine swap maybe not hooked up ground from engine to frame or firewall.
