Weak 460

Wanted to see if anyone could come up with ideas to help my 460. My Father, brother and I dropped this rebuilt 460 into my (dads) F-350 in November.

Now... all along this thing has dogged kinda slow for what we expected a 460 to do. Granted it's in a F-350 Crew Cab, it's a big truck. But for the engine the truck has very little power. Now I wouldn't mind about the gas mileage if it had some power, but it doesn't.

Furthermore, it doesn't have ANY power above 2500rpm. Anywhere from 2500-5000 rpm it seems all this truck is doing is just reving. If I try to accelerate I just let off the gas at 2500 for it to shift and then push back on the gas.

Any suggestions as to what may be bogging this truck down? Things I can check to see if everything is working right? Maybe I just have too high of expectations?

Im just throwing stuff out there at this point -myers

Year of truck and engine would help, plus what was done during the rebuild? (Bet it has a 4° retarded timing set).

Sorry for the lack of info. It's just a standard rebuild, nothing done to take it out of stock(unfortunetly) it's a 96 460, as my tagline states it's a 94 F-350.

thanks guys, im gonna try and get the timing done next time im home, hopefully this will help with the mpg too.

So it's an EFI. But the timing is still controlled by the dist. so I'd recheck the timing. It's easy to screw it up. I just did that on my 460 and couldn't figure what was wrong. Then I realized I'd back the timing off 10° to 0° initial. Didn't idle right (it's a carb motor, your idle is adjusted as necessary by the computer) and felt really flat. Last night I'm sittin' in the lounger and it hits me, Doh!. Reset to 10° initial today and gee, my old motor is back.

What kind of transmission do you have? It's possible that the torque convertor could be going out if the timing adjustment doesn't solve the problem. Or you have the tv cable misadjusted.

It has a very recently rebuilt E40D transmission in it so that doesn't seem likely. Whats the tv Cable? -myers

tv cable is the throttle valve cable... basically what the vacuum modulator in a c-6 does in my understanding... if thats misadjusted that could easily be your problem... or just low fluid- i know its obvious but sometimes even the most obvious things get overlooked

If memory serves me correctly all you have to do is pull the cable adjuster back out of the mount then press the peddle all the way to the floor. This should put the TV cable back in adjustment. However I would back this up with written instructions vice my advice alone.

That business about letting off to shift has me wondering! Might be worth a trip to the Ford store for a test and tune by the people with proper test equipment.

If I had the money I would love to, but ford dealerships just cost WAY too much money. Every experience I have ever had with a dealership would have cost tons of money. You can get the same part for a 1/3 of the dealer cost, or the same service for 1/2. Now granted, in this case the Ford dealership would know best, but it just isn't worth the money. Certianly not harping on you! but there just isn't anyway that I can justify spending all that money.

I agree that work at the dealership is very expensive compared to doing the work yourself. That is one of the reasons I drive a 66 F100. But, spark knock or detonation can easily break the top off a piston. A TV cable out of adjustment can quickly ruin a transmission. So while it may be expensive..... IMHO! I also have a Volvo that my wife drives. I only check the oil, tire pressure, schedule it for regular services and write a check. You could also post your problem in the newer truck forum or in the transmission or one of the others. There are knowledgeable Ford people on here that may be able to help.

I have to agree with William.
This is one of those times you might have to just bight the bullet and go to the dealer. I trust you have allreadey run the codes to see what/if aneything is showing. You may be able to just have them trouble shoot it and tell you what's wrong and see if it is within your capabilitys to fix.
Good luck
Bill

Hopefully getting the timing adjusted will help and I won't have to go to the dealership to get it checked for codes and tuned. If the timing doesn't help then I may bite the bullet and take it to a dealership. -myers
