Ford79 there are several good internet sites that are chock full of information regarding today's televisions including this site ... HDTVSolutions
We have one of the early plasmas, a Sony 37" that we have been very happy with and I've heard my share of 'burn-in' and 'short lived' stories regarding plasma TVs but this particular set has been with us for several years without nary the first indication of any problems...and believe me this little TV has been put through it's paces.
We also have a 73" Mitsubishi RPDLP that has an awesome picture and is great to watch the HD channels with. The Sony SXRD comes up often and quite favorably with most reviewers as well as Pioneer and Panasonic.
I researched an LCD TV for my bedroom last year. After going round and round and round, never finding exactly the answer I needed, I gave up and actually LOOKED at some.
My advice is to go to as many electronics stores as possible, and compare all the TV's. Some TV's with exactly the same technology were so different from each other it was amazing.
In some stores, a certain TV looked awful. Go to another store, that same TV looked great. Turns out, not all signals are the same A connector badly crimped or too many splitters, and you have a crappy picture that has nothing to do with the TV itself.
In other words, shop around as much as you possibly can. Take your time, look around. Write it all down so you can keep track ...
My Acer is a 32". Standard def cable (No box) looks absolutely fantastic, comparable to DVD. That might not be the same on a large screen but with 37" - 42" it shouldnt' be that much different. Remember that a lot of the stores typically bump up the saturation and contrast on the displays so that they look 'awesome' in the store; might want to keep that in mind and ask for the remote to see what the settings really are.
Panasonic makes top notch TV's IMO, if you're looking for good brand names. Sony is probably the worst 'bang for buck' brand, IMO.
I've looked at quite a few in the stores and online and think I've found the one Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV (TH-42PX60U) Now to find a surround sound system to go with it.
imo stay away from plasma... they are so heavy have poor dark quality in comparison to lcd and if it breaks well cant b fixed ... lcd on the other hand better picture quality all around and weighs a lot less ... and they are getting up there in size now
I wonder how much they'll be dropping in price after the first of the year, when the new models come in.
I also just saw this morning that there is a new technology in TV viewing that will be competing as well real soon. I can't remember what they called it but was something to do with "Carbon ***". Something to do with carbon anyhoo. Might be worth finding what that's all about before jumping into the LCD or Plasma bus.
Who knows, LCD and Plasma might come way down in price in response to a technology that is much more superior, but cost the same. That would drop the prices of LCD for sure. Then I think that I would be pleanty happy with my now cheaper LCD TV.
Looking at the pros and cons of all the types available today, only befuddles a person. The more you study, the more confused you get.
We're still at the what if stage, one fairly new CRT, and a set in the bedroom that will be able to vote in a few years - but still working well.
But the new set when we decide, will go in the family room. Fairly sunny and bright. I've thought an LCD, maybe in the 30 plus inch size, 32 or 37. I've read that LCD's don't do well under those conditions, am I right?
i've done my research and found out i can afford neither. if i could, it would be LCD, based on longevity, portability, and cost per inch. ryan is right, the blacks are darker, but for the savings and lifespan i'll allow a little less black. that is unless sassy buys me a plasma then i'll tout that till i die.
Mine is a 19" B&W Zenith, rotary channel selector ****, analog signal with rabbit ears, all in a fake wood grain cabinet.........I guess I'm in the wrong thread, eh?
Our tried and true 37" Sony plasma (see above post) has just developed in the past two days a two inch wide black stripe that runs vertical from the top to the bottom of the screen two thirds to the right side of the screen...looks kind of terminal.
Now it's time to see just how well Circuit City is going to honor our $795 extended warranty ("full replacement") that is good until '09.
Hopefully they honor the warranty, Mine was purchased from Worst Buy, and I didn't get the extended warranty but its been a good machine... at 60,000 hour lifespan, it'll last for the next thirty years... statistically I only have a 58% chance of lasting another 30 years.
