rear end disassembly

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Jul-02 AT 01:09 AM (EST)]'54 f100, volare ifs. i have found a ford 8" rear end, from a mustang, with no posi, that i plan on putting under my f100. i plan on putting in new bearings, and maybe a new center section. i removed the 4 bolts, on the right side, that keep the axle attached to the rear end housing, and the axle came right out, with ease. i did the same with the left side, and it won't come out. i've pulled and pulled, and even hit it with a hammer....and the axle still won't come out of the housing. is it held in with a clip, at the center section? also, this rear end has been sitting for a while, and i cannot remove the center section. is it safe to hit it with a chisel between the mating surfaces? i have 2.79 gears. if anyone has any experience with gear ratios, what should i change to, if i have a 302/c6 combo? i don't plan on racing, but i do want a compromise between a little "umph" and something that won't guzzle the gas.

thanks,
john

The 8' Ford does not use a c-clip. The problem you are experiencing is due to the slight interference fit between the axle bearing and the axle housing. The best approach is to use a slide hammer type axle puller , which you may be able to borrow from Autozone tool loan program. ( or a friend!!!!). A backyard method is to take the rear brake drum and install it backwards with three nuts installed loosely so that you can bang the drum outwardly as a makeshift slide hammer. I would not recommend prying or chiseling on anything as this will not help and will damage the parts.

I agree but, sometimes you do have to wedge a chisel or screwdriver in-between the housings to get it started. You can take a file and smooth down any burrs that may be made. I think I would leave the 2.79's in there, unless you wanted maximum stoplight to stoplight acceleration, or are going to be towing with it. I wouldn't go above 3.50 to 1.

For more leverage you take the drum off and put your wheel back on loose with 3 nuts and give it a couple of good jerks, I've ran accross this problem befor.

Another method to remove axle is to remove brake drum, take a short length of chain put ends of chain on two lug bolts attach lug nuts, tighten nuts. Then take a short length of pipe, steel bar, etc put throught loop of chain , get slack in chain then jerk bar against chain repeat until axle slides out. wear gloves, eye protection etc. Always works for me!
