thinking on buying a 5th wheel instead of a toy hauler and just pulling a 5x8' behind the 5th wheel with my 4-wheeler on it. Anybody have any expierience doing that? pro's and con's? The toy haulers i look at in my price range all put the 4-wheeler in the living area and that's not really the way i'd like to go. The one's with the separate garage are out of my price range.
Most 5th wheels do not have a hitch point capable of towing more than a bicycle. I would ask that question to the manufacturer of the 5th wheel you are looking at.
I would second BPofMD. I looked into having a hitch installed on the back of my trailer and after talking to a few shops decided it was more expensive then it was worth because I was going to have to pay a shop to custom make and mount a hitch.
A 5th whell toy hauler seems a little more practical. There are some very nice ones out there some even including a garage to seperate the living space.
Cost???? Who in the heck were you guys talking about. I had two put on last summer since I couldn't seem to make up my mind on which camper I wanted, lol (my wife was thrilled!!!). I've tow everything from a small single axle four wheel trailor to my uncles 1800 Fisherman with a 150EFI behind my camper and haven't had any problems. I normally have my older 17ft Smokercraft. I haven't paid more than $165 to have one welded at a welding shop yet, although I can definitely see a $300-$400 if the camper has one of those aluminum bumpers. still quite minnor in the scope of things. there are pics of my set up in the my towing gallery!
It isn't legal everywhere so I would check ahead with what states you plan on towing through and make sure you're legal everywhere. you will stick out like a sore thumb going down the highway, lol.
I bit the bullet and got a 37' toybox with the seperate garage (oh yah!!). Almost bought a box with the open garage until a friend recommended I get the little women involved in the decision. Seems they actually don't like the gas smell in their home away from home (go figure!). Disaster averted here! This would have been a deal breaker for us after we depreciated the 5th and had to sell it at a huge loss after one trip!

Thanks
They are about 9k differance in price. Look at a used one . You can build a wall between the living area and the garage part pretty cheap. A set of french doors that hinge on the left and right will give you that wall and you can open it up if you want to. What is your price range ??
I would get one with a wall. That open part would bother me with the gas and mud smell from the toys.
The biggest draw back with doing the combo is you won't be able to back up . You will have to drop the rear trailer first.
Another option, also alot safer than towing doubles (even if it legal in your area), is to have a rack built over the cab with ramps to drive the 4 wheeler up on. look at a auto hauler going down the road, there is always one car right over the cab. this will also put some weight over the steer axle. Just an option to think about.
boomer I have been pulling doubles for 19 years without any problems, some states allow it and some don't, some state allow it behind a 5ver only, and some states allow it behind a TT or 5ver. Our HitchHiker 5ver came with a receiver hitch from the factory, I have also seen a lot of other brands with hitches installed without any problems. SLE is wright about planning, it just takes practice.
