You'r absulutly right! This is exactly why my next rig will be a fithwheel. With my TT I run 73' from the bumper to the boat prop! I plan on upgrading to a larger newer boat within the next couple of years which will push me right near or over the 75' length limit. The same length fifther will be at a minimum 7ft shorter! That may not seem like much but when you've got 75' of crap going down the highway and manuvering through camp grounds it makes quite a difference.

Thanks for that link. I guess I won't be doing that unless I want to go get a CDL.

This site is for pulling behind a TT not a 5ver, with just a fast look I can see 3 states that allow it with a 5ver. Two of them I have double towed in WI and KS.

rvpuller,

FYI there are special restrictions on double or triple pulling in Wisconsin, and unless you have a CDL, or are a Farm vehicle within 150 miles of your farm or are a Tour train in your county, you cannot legally pull doubles in Wisconsin.

343.04
(2) VEHICLE TYPES. For purposes of this chapter, certain
vehicles intended to carry school children or other passengers, or
having special operating characteristics, are divided into the following
vehicle types specified in pars. (a) to (f):
f) Vehicles towing double or triple trailers. Vehicles towing
double or triple trailers are commercial motor vehicles with
double or triple trailers.

348.07 Length of vehicles. (1) No person, without a permit
therefor, may operate on a highway any single vehicle with an
overall length in excess of 40 feet or any combination of 2 vehicles
with an overall length in excess of 65 feet, except as otherwise provided
in subs. (2) and (2a).
(2) The following vehicles may be operated without a permit
for excessive length if the overall length does not exceed the indicated
limitations:
(c) Forty five feet for mobile homes, motor homes, and motor
buses.

www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/lawbook.htm

Bottom line use the reference chart i linked earlier as a quick guide and then check out the specific states DMV laws you will be towing through.

Also here is another link to a towing laws chart with footnotes and brief descriptions. If it is Footnote 43 it means special conditions apply before it is allowed.

Hope this helps

I don't trust any of the Internet sites I call the state before double tow, you also have to make sure you state with a 5ver not a tow trailer. And if its not legal in WI a lot of law enforcement didn't know it because a lot of them seem me. I've been towing double long before the net and I still check the old fashion way.

Yes i agree you always have to check a states regs, in the case of Wisconsin, does not matter if it is a 5ver or TT. And yes many of the local law enforcement don't know some of the laws, or they could have known but let you slide because you were doing everything else correctly and they didn't want to stop you just to see if you had a CDL.

As far as the internet goes, the links i posted are the Wisconsin Government website with the actual full text of the state laws. I like to read the actual laws instead of relying on a phone call to a potentially mis-informed underpaid & overworked government employee on the other end of the line. If they make a mistake they aren't liable for your problem. Kinda like when you call the IRS with a tax question and they give you the wrong answer, then later down the road the audit you, find you made a mistake (base on the bad info you recieved) and they fine and penalize you for an improperly filled out form.

The internet makes it easy to see the full text of the state laws without having to drive down to the state government office and make photocopies.

Commercial vehicles are not a good indicator as they have a CDL and permits so they can do alot of things a standard licensed driver cannot.
As far as IL goes last time i checked the state website, you could tow a second trailer if the first trailer was a 5vr and total combined length of tow vehicle and all trailer could not exceed 60 feet.

The links to the charts are just for quick reference, the state laws can and do change frequently. Always best to go to the state government websites and read the actual law. Especially if you are towing anything more than simple small trailer. Start towing heavy or exotic applications and the laws get complex in a hurry.

Hope this helps

75ft?

Someone oughtta tell this guy that!

I'm thinking a 5th wheel camper behind the Ftruck with this boat & trailer behind that again, might just be the "ideal" rig for a round Oz jaunt!

Wonder if my ol road train truck license will let me haul that combination downunder? Then again - would the Effie handle that sort of transport task?

Maybe it'd be time to upgrade to one of these!

Cheers!
