I use a 2003 explorer xlt for work and the driver's side mirror glass has been broken. Everything else works, electric controls for direction, and I was wondering if the mirror glass can be replaced without buying a new mirror? Any ideas or tips?

I had to replace the entire mirror module. Where I live I was limited to Ford Dealer parts. Pull the door pannel and be carefull not to break any of those plastic tabs. Three bolts hold the mirror on.

To All that have given advice on this repair, thanks very much!
The end result was that I took the vehicle to a large auto glass shop. The shop said they could get a factory approved glass replacement mirror the next day. The mirror glass was quickly replaced the next day. The glass technician just removed all the remaining cracked glass by hand and then blew out all the small chips out with an air hose. The new mirror was placed on the original mirror pedestal and glued on with a silicon glue adhesive, similar to what was on the original installation. A couple pieces of tape were put on to temporarily hold it in place for the day to prevent any jarring from damaging the glass. The mirror now looks like new and work great! Total cost was $35.00 dollars for the mirror glass and labor, about 10-15 minutes to complete the job. So you don't have to buy the total mirror assembly if you just break the glass.
