2bbl to 4bbl

I have a 78 F 100 with a 302 2bbl, is there anything I need to look for (or look out for) in buying a new intake for a 4bbl

Pretty cheap and will do what you need it to...id put on a 600 holley on it, nothing too large.

Don't get carried away on your intake choice. Stick with a dual plane intake, the single plane intakes don't work in low rpm, they tend to kill the torque. My personal choice for the 302 is an Edelbrock Performer with matching Edelbrock 600 electric choke carb.... Matter of fact go all out and get the entire Edelbrock package, cam, lifters, intake, and carb. Good gain in horsepower and torque.....

I agree with the dual plane for a truck setup. The Performer is a good intake design for street use, and a 600 cfm Edelbrock is good for your engine size, for up to and over 6500 rpm.

What would be an advantage of a 600 over a 650?

Welcome to FTE! The best information sharing site on the 'net for Ford trucks.

What transmission do you have? If it's the AOD you have to make sure the new carburetor will adapt to the TV lever on the transmission.

I'm not sure there's much to be gained going to 4-bbl on the 302 anyway. A good 2-bbl (Motorcraft 2150) will flow everything a stock 302 can handle.

If you're going to keep the engine's internals stock, the Performer is OK, just a copy of the factory 4 bbl intakes (which you could also use, they're cheaper) You want a smaller carb to keep the intake velocity up, this improves throttle reponse. If you plan on future upgrades, then go with a high rise dual plane intake such as the Performer RPM, Ford's own A321 or a Weiand Stealth. These will all work well on the bottom end but give you a boost on top too, even with a stock motor.

You might also want to consider a Holley 350 or 500 cfm 2 bbl. The 500 will give you 4bbl performance on top without swapping intakes.

Yea, I was gonna say unless you're going to do something about the 1978 bottom of the abyss cam and compression, a bigger 2 bbl will run your motor to 5500. I used a 500 Holley on a 289. Too rich on the accelerator pump, but that can be fixed. Instead of fixing it, I switched to a Motorcraft 2bb off the neighbor's 390.

Go here for 2bbl info:

The Holley 500's 50cc pump can be easily swapped to a 30 cc unit. You might get a lean stumble though with it, I've used the 500 on 4 different Ford V8's and it worked fine on all. The first was a stock 302 in a 69 Econoline van, next as a center carb on a 390 sixpack, then as a replacement for my 68 Merc's original carb on it's 390, then on a stock 400M with a Summit P/N SUM-5200 cam and longtube headers.
