I have done 4 hours of search's on the forum but have yet to find a 521 buildup.
I have a 74 crew 4x4 that I am going to install a 77 lincoln 460 in. The 460 is a standard bore so I would go 30 over with a stroker kit to get 521. I use this truck as a hunting rig and need a ton of torque as I pull a very heavy quad trailer with enough tools and gear to sink a ship. I have had no luck pulling it with my 390 so I have made up my mind and it is gone this winter for the 460 block.
I would like to get 9 to 9.5 compression use iron heads D3VE, I have read I can shave the heads and block down .010 to bring the compression up. I would buy a stroker kit from Scat or eagle to start with. Get the block decked and aligned.
I would buy a new aluminum intake and carb, headers and cam and lifters, maybe even a aluminum water pump! I will be running it around a bit and want it to be reliable but milage is not an issue, I don't even want to know.
The truck is a 4 speed that I will be changing out to the 4 speed and transfer case out of my 78 supercab with a 400m in it so it will match up with the exception of the fly wheel. I also have to remove my old divorced case and shafts to suit the new case.
I will need to get a new oil pan also, a Moroso? does anyone have the part number?
If anyone has any ideas of the parts needed to make a torque monster that would be great:
I would like to get away with it for under $5k on the motor if possible. any ideas?
Thanks a bunch!
For the oil pan the moroso part number is 20612, don't forget you need the rear sump oil pump to go with that, and proper pickup. getting the compression you want with the D3 heads is pretty simple. mill the heads about .010 will put your chambers pretty close to 94cc, zero deck the block so the pistons are right at it, and get a 22cc dish pistons and you are at 9.42:1 on a 521cid stroker.
As far as intakes I really prefer the stealth, some will say it will give up low end torque over say a performer, or the stock intake but on a stroker it's torque range is going to be right off idle. on the cam, something with a split duration like the comp cams 4x4 xtreme series cams will be best.
The 521 is a pretty straight forward deal to put together. Scat has a ready made kit for it that'll get you Probe dished pistons, rings, bearings, a cast crank, and rods - - already balanced in a big box to your doorstep.
A decent flat tappet hydraulic, the aforementioned kit, machining, and a freshening on the heads will easily fit within your budget. And leave room for the bolt ons...
You do not have to do anything at all to the block - - it'll drop right in just like stock parts. An extra 60 cubes will really do wonders for the truck though!
get a stock rear sump off a 80s 460 truck the dip stick is in the pan your dip stick is in the t.c. cover on a car motor . the ford pan , oil pickup , and dipstick are better than aftermarket and cost less.
Perfect info guys, I went down to the speed shop and cost out some parts, the crank kit is $1591,00 not bad! 4.3 stroker with H beam rods and forged pistons and rings for 9.6 compression and rod and main bearings.
Lucas, your right the oil pan is not cheap. $286 plus 75 bucks for the pickup. I think I will take your advise and look at the scrap yard first. 1/2 hour under a truck is cheap.
Do you guys know if these hedman headers will work in my 1974 crew? They are part number 89140. The guy at the shop said they would work fine. $213 bucks.
another question, Is a macleod flywheel any good? and do I need the 176 tooth 15.52 inch one or the 180 tooth heavy duty? I think it was 28 oz.
That sucker is $495 wow.
But $3300 for a 521 stroker is not bad, plus machining and assembly. I am going to have to try to find a good shop to balance this thing up for me too. In Calgary, any suggestions???? EH? AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Thanks again for all the help.
dont use the 28 oz flywheel, youre getting an internal balance assembly and need a neutral balance flywheel and balancer and crank spacer, if you try to use the 28 oz balance flywheel youll toast out your bearings in a hurry

Oil pans are available from Ford, either through FRPP or at your local ford dealer. Rear sump with pickup, and dipstick same pan as stock van or pickup 460 pan. It's also used as a Fox body mustang swap pan. FRPP part number for the kit is M-6675-A460, and costs $149.88 at Summit, usually about the same from your local Ford dealer, but some are higher.
Might want to research that kit a bit. Scat can balance the whole deal before they ship it out - they're usually decently close, and it'll cost a lot less...
I will call the tech line at Scat before I order it, good catch on the flywheel, this was my first look into the flywheel part of the build and the guy at the speed shop really was not a ford guy as he didn't know many of the answers. Again, this is why I am referinfg to you guys, your input is excellent and ususally right on the money.
How about for the carb, some guys say try the 600cfm one I have first but I figure it would starve this big stroker, I think a 750 would be way better. Which one is the easiest to bolt on with reliability in mind?
i personally like the edelbrock... they get a little better mileage than holley, dont have a power valve to blow out if it backfires through the carb, but they make slightly less power... so if youre for all out power then go holley, if you want a little better mileage and reliability go edelbrock... your choice
