fe oil

I have been running 15-40 in my 390. I was wondering if it would be ok to run 5-40 rotella in the winter. It is very cold here this time of the year. Or would i be better off to run 10-30.

thanks

Easy question...

5W-40....

A 5W is lighter weight than a 10W.

A 5W-40 will operate like a 5W when cold and a 40 weight when warm/hot.

A 10W-30 operates like a 10 weight when cold and a 30 weight when warm/hot.

Depending on the type of motor you have the viscosity you need to run... then you really can't go wrong with either. If diesel go with 5W-40. If gasser go with 10W-30... as a 40 weight is thicker than any new gasser motors mandate or allow.

Why not try a 5w-30 dino oil?

And what do you mean by "very cold". There are many around here that think Dallas gets "very cold" in the winter.

Is it a stock motor, or do you have an aftermarket cam in it? If you have an aftermarket cam, you'll probably want to stick with the diesel rated oil. 5w40 Rotella should work well. Crane cams recommends staying away from the synthetics for the first 5000 miles though, so in case this is a new rebuild stay away from the 5w40 for the first 5000 miles. Other than that, yeah, go ahead with the 5w40!
