Mustang 2

Im 16 and im building my first truck a 54 f-100. Im trying to see where to buy the kit from. I seen prices for chassis engineering, fatman, and hiedt's and know people that have used them (dont know which one is the best). Also i found a Hub to hub from southern hot rod parts for a lot less then other and i was seeing if any one has used a southern hot rod m2. Any help will be very Appreciated.
Thanks

welcome to the board.... I know how you feel about looking around for a good MII unit. an MII unit is very expensive and can put a dent in your pocketbook, however I bought my kit from Heidts. It was the ful hub to hub kit. It went together well and I am very happy with it.

However, being so young, you may want to look for alternative routes so that you can save money. There are ways of doing this, such as buying the cross member and hats for an MII kit from one of the manufacturers you mentioned above, and going to a junkyard and finding the rest of the suspension from a donar car...

either way, welcome to the board

I got my MII from CPP, basically a dealer for TCI. I haven't been able to use it yet, but the install was pretty straight forward. I gave the Heidt's a really long look, but got some extras with my kit, so that's why we went with the TCI. The Heidts might actually be of higher quality, but you do pay for that quality.
just my $.02

I used the Heidts Mustang II front xmember in my 54(oddly enough when I was 16) and it was a snap to put in. Just make sure to MEASURE, then MEASURE AGAIN, then MEASURE AGAIN, tack it in, then MEASURE again, then finish your weld. The most important step in the process was the measuring, IMO. I believe Heidts is a higher quality than the kit from CPP, I have installed both on trucks, the Heidts in my 54 and the CPP in a 48 F1.

Heidts has a hub-to-hub kit, about the only thing I ordered from Heidts aside from the x-member was the lower control arms. Otherwise you can go to a boneyard and get the spindles, springs, upper control arms, and the rack(thats what I did, and ordered spacers for it). IF you can find a MII in a junkyard anywhere, luckily I actually knew a guy that wanted to get rid of a MII so I didn't have to look very hard.

Either way, if you need any help, feel free to ask. I was in your place once too, still am in a lot of areas.

I haven't seen a bolt on kit for our trucks. There is some type of kit for 65-66 Mustangs though. Did you ask your uncle who sells it?

This is only my opinion, but I don't know if I would feel safe with a bolt on kit.

yeah, they make bolt on MII kits, but not for our trucks..

I would go with Digger on this, i don't think i would feel safe with a bolt on kit.. If you are iffy about welding it, have someone who knows how to weld do it.

I pieced my mustang 2 together from various venders and kept a list of what it cost. I just did not have all the dollars at one time so I done mine over time and plus I'm doing a frame off so the truck is setting up anyway. I'm sure some can do it cheaper, because I seen some of the prices for items drop since I've brought mine. But heres the break down.

Hartrods TCI Mustang II Crossmember Kit www.hartrods.com/ $379.00
Zigs Tubular Lower A arms www.zigsstreetrods.com/ $299.00
Fatrodders Tubular upper A arms www.ebay.com $145.00
Ebay (Codyzcorner) 2" Drop Spindles www.ebay.com $92.19
Ebay (rodpartsdealer) Big Brake Kit www.ebay.com $257.00
Speedway Motors Eaton Coil Springs www.speedwaymotors.com $90.00
Speedway Motors Mustang II Spindle Nut and Washer kit www.speedwaymotors.com $5.95
Speedway Motors Coil Springs Cushion www.speedwaymotors.com $18.95
Speedway Motors Power Rack & Pinion www.speedwaymotors.com $149.00
Napa Shocks $50.00
Total $1,486.09

I got my TCI on Ebay for $1649, that included shipping, engine mounts and trans crossmember and everything that mkabwe had. Not sure about the brake kit though.
It was a good deal, all came together, instructions were iffy but manageable with OK quality. Like I said earlier, the Heidts is probably a better built kit.

IMHO, a kit is the way to go unless you really like to scavenge parts. My time is worth something to me and with these kits, everything is new/fits together.

I think FatMan Fabrications has a bolt in kit, but I haven't heard anything good about them, a buddy of mine used one of their kits on his bowtie and had fitment problems. I would definitely go with a weld in kit, I wouldn't trust those bolts to not shear off or break in some way, maybe I'm just paranoid.

i wouldnt trust them either. I would end up welding the "bolt in" kit, which kind of defeats the purpose of buying one in the first place.
