I don't think anybody here paid 50k for their truck. Also, what many paid is usually as much as they could to get the most they could, and sometimes that means being careful where they spend the rest of their disposible income.
I could leave mine plugged in all night if I wanted to, but rarely do except when it's super cold and I know I'm leaving early to hunt. It's not a matter of affording it, it's a matter of wasting money and I abhorr that. Even on the coldest days here, which are nothing compared to way up north, mine will light up OK with about 1 hour of cord.
Well most superdutys up here are almost 50K when you factor in taxes , fianance charges , and extra ad ons.
My engines worth a few thousand and any thing I can do to be kind to it I will.
Starters and batterys are not cheap and plugging in saves on both of those.
It saves on fuel in the morning it doesnt take as long for your truck to warm up.
So the price of the power is small compared to the benifits!
California ripped us off for a bunch of power but we still have enough to plug in our trucks at night.

I'm not disputing your point, just pointing out that things are not like that here in the lower 48. You can buy a brand new PSD loaded here for less than $50k still today. I just wouldn't have a 6.0, not to mention I paid less than $30K for my rig.
Edit: Vinford, I see that you have a 78 350 listed. I was going to mention that your engine was worth more than you quoted but I see that may not be the case. Mine is worth 10k to me minimum. I'm actually happy if you have a 78 running well. Good testament to the breed.

The truck im driving is a 02 F-350 PSD 4x4 Lariat.
The old 78 has a inline heater in it.
It gets the water almost boiling in no time (2 hours) which is enough for it.
A block heater such as the one in the 02 take much much longer.
Ill see if I can remember how to ad pictures and ad a picture of the 02!
Maybe check my profile again theres a picture of my truck taken today.
It wasnt plugged in so it looks a little cool.
If it had of been plugged in it wouldnt be sitting there warming uop!
yep remove the old one and replace it with a new one. sorry it really is that simple. at the oil filter housing pry the two metal clips apart and remove the end fromt he heater. then unclip the cord from the frame as it is routed and then reinstall the new one in the same manner. They use little black plastic push pins to secure it to various points along the frame and inner fender.
