Ran out of diesel and my truck is stuck on the side of the road. Put 5 gal in it and it still wont start. Do I need to bleed the system and prime it or what.

completely fill the tank(front one if you have dual tanks) even if it takes you three trips with the fuel can. Then take the lid off the fuel filter housing and fill it. you will have to crank it a bit but cycle your cranking (crank to a ten count, let starter cool for a 30 count, then crank for ten) when it does fire off it's gonna run like crap for a little bit while it ourges the lines of air.
DO NOT USE STARTING FLUID!!!
Running a diesel out of fuel is not good for the injectors to say the least. 1/4 tank means empty, get fuel now!
Again, it's gonna be a bugger to get it fired off.

I completely agree with you. Cycling the key turns the pump on. It shouldn't be that hard to start. Filling your filter housing will help, but you shouldn't have to do this.

I'd cyle the key on and wait for the pump to stop a couple of times, then wait several minutes for your glow plug system to cool, then repeat. The fuel pump will run about 20 seconds or so each time, but you also activate the glow plugs...
