I have a 1999 Ford Explorer XL and I am about to start buying some performance parts for it. How Can I tell which engine it has in it. A SOHC 4.0 V6 or just a regular V6. Aparently there are two different ones? I'm not real smart when it comes to engines so please be gentle.
If you're close to a dealer, run your VIN by the service department and hopefully they'll help you; one of the digits in the VIN will tell you whether it's a pushrod or SOHC V6.
There should be a big plastic shroud right on top of the motor that says SOHC on the front of it. If you have a thing showing on the top running vertically with tunnels coming off the side down into the engine and it says efi or ohv on it then you have the 4.0 OHV engine.

Thanks for the help guys. It appears by the appearance, (It does show the down tubes on the manifold) and by the VIN code that it is the OHV. I appreciate all the information. It has been very useful.
