Alright boys here it is. Im a 7.3 PSD owner presently speaking and im lookin to upgrade here pretty soon and i need the info on the 6.o? I have heard them called 6.slows repeatedly. I have even called them this in my times of glory after spankin em down the highway. layin coal down the sides of their pretty white trucks. lol, sad to say that current events in my life are demanding a bigger truck. Im tryin to stay a ford guy, i want a four door, dually thats four wheel drive, diesel of course. I just dont wanna pay out the nose for a new truck so im gonna go used. I would like to stay automatic but im gonna be pullin horses across the west coast so do i go manual or can the auto handle it? Can the auto handle mods? i.e.- injectors? what year of 6.0 to i buy? i have heard some years of the 6.0 production were no good. this truck will most likely not stay stock, So any input on a 6.0 would be greatly appreciated.
well, don't know what 6.0 your "spankin" because physics rule, the 6.0 has more power than even a modded 7.3. i know my 2006 would run circles around my 1995 f350.
anyways, the trouble years i guess are 2003 and early 2004, but i would think by now all the trouble ones would have been fixed or weeded out, so if you see an unusually low mileage one....i would stay away.
and the torqueshift is one of the strongest trannies ever produced for a truck, i am quite positive it will handle a horse trailer.
as far as mods go, the 6.0 is sesative, people have had no probs with them, on the other hand, lots of people have...i see no reason for mods other than just for hobby sakes. if you do get a tuner, make sure to get one that also provides for the transmission as well.
lol, my 7.3 is pretty heavily modded. many a 6.0s have met there match. Modding a diesel is the best part about owning one. I will most likely never be able to resist the urge of modding out a diesel rig that i own. I almost need like an AA class but for diesel mods, lol.
TorqueShift is strong then an Allison? Is it as reliable as my e40d? lol, cause if it is, Im goin manual!
Go used, get a low mile 05 or 06. I have a 05 and it Pulls HARD. I would think nothing of a 6 horse trailer and loading the roof with hay. It loves a workout. Mine pulls an 8500 lb trailer with a full load of firewood and I am not worried about people behind me, I am worried about who is slowing me down.
I would go 5 speed auto, easily as strong and good as a allison 1000 series. Not many can shift a manual 6 speed and not loose boost. But if you are a manly man, a 6 speed is good too. I drive an auto, so my SO can get me home after a few too many HAHA. She dont like a standard, I said OK to the lariat, no to the 6 sp.
go chip and gauges and pipes and you are at ~400 to 440hp, easily spank any 7.3. (still pullin the trailer)
then kelderman airride all the way around, 19.5 inch rims, propane injection, transferflow tank, the list goes on and on.
Oh yeah, drive a 6.slow auto hard and see what it can do. If its working right, you wont call it a 6.slow again. I used to drive a 5.0 "cobra" mustang, my truck weights in close to 3x and it pulls pretty close the same 1/4. My Larry is stock.
i have had a customer with a hauler setup, he told me his tag weight was 30,000lbs if that tells you something. he had 50k when i saw it last and not even a service.
My 05 gets beat on pretty hard. Customers always want a ride in it. I have yet to see a 7.3l keep up, maybe Im lucky lol. 24k miles with a custom SCT on Extreme Race, no problems (knock on wood). Good luck and happy shopping!
04, head studs, SCT custom tunes, contact Beans diesel for injectors and a turbo, Spearco intercooler, fluid damper, and upgrade the trans with a Suncoast kit and converter.
I've had both, currently a 05 6.0, and the only mod is a edge WAM, the only thing collecting the (coal dust) was the fairly modded 99 7.3 that seen nothing but my taillights. My last 7.3 was a 00 with SCT, ran it against a stock 03 6.0 and they ran almost dead even up to 90 mph. Just my 2cents but 6.0 is it.
Stronger than an Allison... and cheaper to repair too...
Even running a pretty crazy SCT tune, just alter shift points, and your transmission will still be pretty good.
If you are looking for a used 6.0l either research it back to front, or go for an 05 and later
allison strong. hahahaha maybe 5-10 years ago. its past its time. i agree.... the torqshift is far better. the new 6 speed allison is identical to the 5 speed. the 5 speed was originally designed to be a 6 speed auto.

the torqshift is a 6 speed. this is out of a shop manual. below 5 degrees it skips 5 until it warms up, above it skips fourth. or vice versa i cant remember which.
