I've had a recurring problem with my wipers, and I would be very grateful for trouble-shooting tips/procedures. I've tried replacing the control switch (on steering column, that controls speed & on/off), and that didn't solve the problem. Here's what happens: While the wipers are on an intermittent speed, all of a sudden, they will switch to the steady speed (slower of the two) and remain on. I cannot turn them off, even when I turn off the truck and the key is out of the ignition. The only way I can get them to turn off is to pull the fuse (which I am now very good at doing as I drive down the highway). The control switch will allow me to change the speed to the fastest speed and back to the steady speed.
This problem stopped when I disconnected the harness from the motor and reconnected it. The wipers operated fine for about 6 months. Now, the problem is back, and this "re-set" does not work.
The truck is all "stock" with no new special electrical features (other than the towing electronic break).
Any suggestions for trouble shooting? Anyone ever hear of something like this? Could it be the motor (since it isn't the switch)?
Sounds like a problem with the GEM module. This module controls many fuctions such as wipers, power windows, power door locks, the horn, and many other things! The module should be behind the fuse box under the dash. The most common cause is water intrusion into the module caused by a windsheild leak. Unbolt the fuse box and let it hang down to gain access to the module. The module is attached to the back of the fuse box. Unplug and remove the module and give your local ford dealer the part# to match it up.
