FE's used several different length oil pump drives and it's possible to end up a bit short.Through mis-calculations I have done this, and rounded out the end of the shaft. Not having anything longer,I cut the end off a six point socket and using the shaft as a guide, welded it to the dissy gear. Using a glob of heavy grease in the hole inside the block to keep the shaft centered also helps when dropping the dissy in place. And I have had a DUI dissy for years, like them and the service.
Still not sold on them but they do look easy to install/maintain.
Just wondering if dollar for dollar I would be better off with something else for a Strip car that will see a few miles on the street.
I feel I should back-up and clarify some thing that I said in my first post. The 351w was the engine I found problems with when installing D.U.I. distributors.
I also need to re-state that the running conditions were anything but normal, cruel and extreme maybe, but not everyday type operation. I was impressed by the design and finish, and if I was in the market, I might consider them myself.
But first impressions are unforgetable,as are redundant repairs. I can't see anyone having a problem with them under daily driver or racing applications. They are tough, but we asked alot by installing them in these compressor engines. Did'nt intend to give Davis a black eye, just though you all would like to know where the line is before you trip over it.
The DUI in my 416 has run fine for over 5000 miles so far. Much hotter spark and quicker starting than the Duraspark unit I took out. I have run a 428 CJ intake and Edel RPM intake, both require a 1 inch thick carb spacer for a large diameter air cleaner to clear the distributor cap and wires.
Folks comment how "clean' my engine looks without all the wires, coil, etc.
I am totally pleased. JMO.
They've approached me to sell the DUI for FEs. Prices are about normal I guess. None of the guys on the FE forum seem too excited about them - so I never ordered one. If anyone wants to try one out and give feedback I'd welcome the info...
There ya go Barry!! Get one and I'll put on the new build for old blue!! How much better can you test something! It lives in the country, goes to the lake! Runs around town and on the 2 lane road at 65mph..and gets to go to the drags too!!
I have had a DUI for about 1 and 1/2 years with no complaints. Actually...I really like the setup. The best part is they are curved on a dizzy machine based on the specs of your motor. My 390FE (see sig) runs smooth and idles just as smooth. I have since checked the spark plugs...and they are running as good as can be...Very happy!
The install could not have been easier...and the one wire to the pos (+) is all it takes. At the same time...I also installed an ARP oil pump driveshaft...since I was in there. Plus, I went ahead and installed a 10amp mini fuse in-line. The unit only requires like 3amp...and for me with a dual electric fan setup that really helps.
I did have to reduce my 14" air filter to a 12", but not a big deal. The DUI is a big unit, but so much nicer without all those wires running around the engine compartment.
OBTW: I went from a Jacobs Electronic System to the DUI.
