Since my search link is gone can someone help me out with this problem. I have a 2002 Ford Excursion (V10) that needs the fuel filter replaced. Does anyone have a diagram or procedures on how to accomplish this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Go to any auto parts store and buy a fuel line removal tool. <$10. The tool clamps over the ends of the filter and slides up into the fitting to release it. I believe there are also retainer clips you need to pull out first.
You can google search for an F150 or any other modern truck fuel filter replacement instructions and find pictures. It's generally quite easy. Just make sure you're not smoking when you do it. It's been a long time since I've done one, but I plan to change my Excursion this weekend.
Don't foget to bleed the fuel pressure down before you undo the filter. On the fuel rails on top the engine theres a scrader fitting, looks like a tire valve stem. Put a rag over and push the stem in.

ramsmoker is correct and this is very important. I would add one thing - Disconnect the fuel pump fuse before you bleed the fuel pressure or change the filter, since in some vehicles the fuel pump will keep the fuel line under pressure even if the ignition is off. I'm not sure if the Ex is like this, but it doesn,t hurt to be safe.
Easiest way it to pull the fule pump fuse while the engine is running. Once the engine dies (within seconds) you are free to pull the filter. No need to mess with the Schrader valve.
Let us know if it indeed solves your cutting out problem. If you're getting intermittent stalling, I'm not too sure I would suspect the fuel filter first but you didn't give us a lot to go on so I'll just wait and see.
Harold,
Did you use the filter removal tool? I need to change the filter in my Explorer and had no luck removing the filter. Also, did you just pull the fuse or did you bleed the line?
I just opened the gas cap on the vehicle and let out the pressure that way. There was no pressure in the system when I replaced my filter. The only gas that came out was what drained out of the lines. I don't see the need to otherwise depressurize the system.
