I'd like to add this only happens when stopped and then turning sharply L or R.
Limited slip problem that feels like it's in the front but it's actually coming from the rear.Clatter, binding etc.
Going to try changing the diff oil next week and add the Ford friction reducer before going to the dealer.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem.
I'm going on a 800 mile trip this weekend.
Should be ok because this problem only happens when the roads are wet.

Thanks for the reply Steve but changed both.
I did only put one 4 ounce bottle of the friction modifier and I don't have a limiterd slip diff.
I did a 700 round trip to Maine this past weekend.
Still have the problem only on wet roads when stopped and making a hard L or R.
Dry roads and no thump.

i have noticed a similar thing when parked on the side of the road, turn the wheel hard , step on the throttle and try to make a U- turn. All 4 wheels are turning a different speed and i think the ABS system kicks in and trys to keep the wheels turning the same speed. I think it is somewhat of a flaw design in the brake system. Only happened 3-4 times in the last couple years, always the same setup. Is that what you are feeling?????

Vibrations when accelerating and turning
I've been experiencing the same thing, I think? It occurs when I back out of the driveway and turn to the left and begin to accelerate forward - I get a vibration that feels as if it is coming from the fron end. I thought it was the CV joints or front u-joints. I would think that my 2002 Explorer AWD had CV joints up front. Now I'm starting to notice it when I make left turns from a stopped position and begin to accelerate as I turn. Now the big question - is it covered under the Extracare Extended Service Plan?

Then again that's about the only time I make a hard turn from a stop.
Does it happen when the ground is wet only?
Steve,my mechanic feels it's a transfer case issue.
Didn't feel it this morning but the roads were pretty dry.

Does your explorer have a 2 high option or does it just have an auto for crusing? If it is just auto, then what you are hearing is the front axle's engaging and disengaging. It's normal for the "all time 4wd". I have a 97 4X4 with 135,000 miles that has the shifter that says 'auto, 4 high, 4 low'. Put new axle's in it, $600 later, then I found out it is normal

I never noticed the problem the first 16K miles.
Could be normal but I don't like it.

I have the same problem as does Techteach1, I have a 02 explorer limited with 100,000 pls miles. About 2000 miles ago it started with this vibration in the rear end. Only does it when starting from a dead stop and making a L or R turn. I thought it was something in the axle gears or the limited slip because as soon as the truck straightens out, it quits. I changed the diff lube, no change, New brakes and rotors didnt fix it. It feels like the brakes are chattering or or hanging up, but it rolls freely.

This is common with the ControlTrac T/C,
Changing the fluid in the T/C(ATF) and cleaning the hale sensors, usually fixes the problem.
The clutch pack is binding because of the different turning ratio of the wheels and thicker viscosity of the old fluids.
Remember this unit is working constantly in an effort to eliminate slippage front/back.

Where are they and how would I clean them?
I did do a Mercon fluid transfer case change.
Will have to wait for a rainy day to check and see if the fluid change helps.
