For those of you who hae built their own flatbeds, what did you use for taillights?. I want something that is durable but doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm gonna have expanded metal on the outside of them to somewhat protect them but still need them to be pretty good lights. Pics would be cool if you have them.
Tractor supply has metal enclosures for tail light assemblies and lights. they have standard lights and LEDs cheap and work well. I welded a set of the enclosures on my buddies 89 superduty dump truck and a set on the chipper. Because of the abuse the lights were taking. That was 2 years ago and they are still holding up great.
I've frenched in 73-79 taillights laying on their sides betweent the bumper and bed surface. On my 72, I'm doing the same thing with the original 72 lights, plus a second set of 4" round backup lights, and flush mount runing lights on the sides.
I usually use trailer lamps (DOT approved). I even used them as replacement lamps on my F-100 stepside. Do not use ones with push connectors for the wires. I think sealed LED lamps are very nice.
Grote is a standard and most metal boxes are designed to fit them.
Personally I would go with a high quality LED. They work nice and are super visible. May take a new flasher to make the turn signals flash normal. Most good ones have a 10 year warranty. They are a little bit more than a standard light, but they are worth it. Ones with more LED's look nicer, than cheaper ones with less. Check out maxxima.com. Very nice lights.
