Those passages in the intake manifold are for water crossover, but there is no water crossover in a 400 motor. There are no mating passages in the heads.
What kind of Edelbrock manifold do you have? In most manifolds produced today, there are no water passages in the manifolds either.
It may be oil seeping from the end seals under the manifold. Did the motor have the rubber end seals, or was it silicone sealer?
I am suspicious of that intake manifold, it doesn't fit correctly.
the performer 400 model 2171, it had the rubber end seals the stamped date on the manifold is 92 or 93, it is raining today but i will take some pics and pull the heads as well.
on the pass side the back 2 cylinders were black and oily the front were normal and i located the ticking noise as well, one of the vavles is recessed into the spring retainer, so i guess i need to install new valve locks, pics is blurry or you may be able to see it.
driver side only one cylinder was oily/black the rest were normal color
here are the pics
intake
rear of pass cyl
second from back cyl
back 2 chambers
front 2 chambers
valve springs the 2 shineys spots at 10 and 6 o clock are where the rocer was hitting the retainer and making the ticking noise the valve is recessed about a 1/4 inch or so and you can freely move the spring
also do these look like factory pistons?? and if you could let me know anything i would need to get to remedy these problems i would appreciate it. plan on putting it back together this coming weekend. if possible.
also one of the head gaskets was similar if not the same thing as the ones posted in the 351 .040 gasket threads. it was the drivers side.
plus there was no header gaskets no wonder they leaked
Scrape off the goo on one of the pistons, and look for a number (010, 020, etc...) that will tell you if you have factory pistons... they look factory.... but I could be wrong.
with the plugged oil cross over and the other burnt and mismatched work done previously on this engine my question is why you are not having the block possibly check out closer. I hate heat and lack of oil.
I can't afford to stay at a Holiday Inn Express thats why I ask so many Questions.
