I have a 92 e-350 that does not start for a while after it is hot. After it cools off, it fires right up. I have not done a compression test yet, but I suspect either low compression, or , more likely, a worn injection pump. It has 150,000 miles on it and it smokes a little most of the time, white smoke, seems to be getting worse. If anyone has any suggestions, I am hoping I don't need a rebuild. Thanks,
Jeff
i had the exact problem a couple of months ago. if you pour a bottle (or couple) of water on the ip when it is hot and won't start and it starts after you have cooled it down, that's your problem.
i found a very good local rebuild shop that gave me all the advice and instruction, sold me the pump, flushed all my lines ip lines also.
took less than 3 hours total, off and back on. worked like a champ after the install.
sad part was that we had damaged the starter during this hard starting period. just replaced the starter yesterday.
Thanks for the info, I suspected the IP because if it was low compression it would not start right after shutting down, but it will start for a while (about 10 - 15 minutes) but after that it just cranks without starting. I think that the ultra low sulphur diesel fuel has claimed another victim. I have heard from Bosch and Stanadyne that the new formulation lacks the lubricity of the old low sulphur diesel. They talked about a lot of pump failures that looked like they were caused by lack of lubrication and/or diaphragm overheating. They said that the rotary distributor type pumps were more readily damaged. I have been adding fuel conditioner but I think the damage has already been done. Thanks again,
Jeff
