I bought an '06 SD with the basic XL work truck pkg. The truck came with GE Halogen headlights. It is a 2 headlight system and takes the square bulbs. This truck does not have the clear plastic lense - jewel effect headlamp as seen on the XLT pkg. Besides adding more lights to the truck, I would like to replace the 2 factory headlights with something that is a lot brighter - without going blue.
From the sounds of it, you have the "non aerodynamic" headlights. I didn't take a close look at them, but they seemed to be a sealed beam. Sealed beams are very old tech and your not going to be able to do much with them. Your best bet is to spend the money to upgrade to nice headlights. The lights are expensive, but the harnesses are out rageous. The last set I purchased for a customer ran them $95 each from motorcraft. It uses a proprietary 9008 bulb, but it is much better tech. Piaa will come out with them soon enough.
Swap out to the jeweled/aero headlights... MUCH better than the sealed ones.
All you need for the swap is a upgraded (Dfuser/gosracing) harness and the headlights...
the 05-07 super duty/ excursion headlights are readily available from ebay and are rather cheap. the harness runs about $80 from dfuser for the complete harness and that includes the adapter end. the pigtails are very cheap if you cut your ends off and did it that way. then you wouldn't need the other harness. you could do the entire swap for under $200 and thats including the bulbs. i have proof, look in my gallery. i did the swap from the 9007 to 9008.
Replace the sealed beams with the generic jeweled H4 replacements. I did that to my 2000 F250 XL in 2000. They have a far superior pattern and brightness. I think mine came from Advance Auto. They were pretty cheap.

Where'd you find headlights for under $150? eBay?
Most places give the convo kit for around $400...
I wanna get my Dad a set for his truck and the dfuser harness for my truck.
Have any of you swapped out your jewel headlamp bulbs to a higher wattage?
The stock bulbs on one of my rigs were 55 watts on low beam, and 60 watts on high beam. For $8 per bulb I put in 55W/100W, and you can see real well with the 100 watt high beam.
Are 100 watt high beam bulbs available for the SD? Like a 55W/100W? How would the wiring handle it? (It does fine in my other rig.)
i dont think that the wiring would like the 100 watt bulbs. and they will start to turn the plastic chrome inside the lights to a white color.
as for the lights being cheap, you have to just keep looking, i had to buy my lights as singles. i had to wait about 2 months to find the right price and the housings that were perfect. 1 was $65 and had a small scuff on the front that i buffed out and now looks perfect. and the other was $105. and was brand new in a factory ford sealed box. came with the bulbs and all. then i bought the harness from dfuser. and cut the header panel, didn't replace it. the entire front end cost me under $700 and thats for the chrome package sd grill, headlights , fog lights and brackets, and bumper with painted top. these parts are out there you just have to be patient and you will find them. i just got 2 tow mirrors with brand new ford chrome covers with signal power and heat all for $285.
