Harmonic balancer bolt

hey guys, I am trying to get the harmonic balancer off my 351M to change the timing set. I can't seem to get the big bolt in the center to come loose. I've used PB Blaster on it and it still won't break loose. What is the best way to keep the engine from turning while trying to turn the bolt? Also, are they normal threads or reverse threads on it? I have used a strap wrench to hold the pulley but it still slips a little bit and allows the engine to turn. Is there a trick to getting that thing loose?

Yes they are right handed threads, turn left to losen. Have you tryed to hold the fan? Or get someone to hold a screwdriver in the flywheel.

Air impact wrench works great! If engine is out and you can see the entire flexplate, stick a bar in a hole and "jam" on the block. If you have a flywheel, use longer bolts where the pressure plate bolts on, put pry bar between bolts to hold from turning.

If still in truck, put in gear with parking brake on, or place in Park. Good Luck

I was stuck pulling mine in the Kragen parking lot after my chain jumped a tooth. I pulled the pully off, but then replaced two of the bolts, next to each other, not opposite ends of the balancer. Left them sticking out about an inch, and set a crowbar (or tire jack, or any other solid piece of metal about 20 inches or so) between the two bolts so the head of it was up against the water pump, the crowbar held the balancer still while I went at the big bolt with a my socket with a three foot piece of pipe on the end of it. Popped loose like nothing. The balancer bolts go on two of the holes next to each other so when the crowbar is in there it doesn't block the big bolt.
Sort of the caveman way to do it, but I was on my own and it worked well, fast and free. Best of luck to you.

i've done it that way too, a piece of carboard to protect the radiator isn't a bad idea though. crap happens.

Thanks guys. Using the 2 bolts and the crowbar against the water pump holds the engine from turning over. Bolt is still not turning but I haven't had a chance to get a piece of pipe to get some leverage. Hopefully that will do the trick. I took the radiator out of the truck to get a little room to work and most importantly to save it from certain destruction.
