Door latch bushing?

I picked up some door latch bushings at the parts store last night. This morning I took the bolt off to change the bushing and found that the washer is captured behind the threads. I split a piece of CPVC and put it over the bolt as a shadetree fix but would like to know how to get the correct bushing on the bolt.

The Bolt and Bushings are supposed to be replaced as one unit.

You can get these door striker bolts in the "HELP" section of most auto parts stores.

I replaced them On My old ranger one time. Mine were already missing the bushings when I got the truck, and they drove me crazy with the rattle and wind noise. I guess the were worn, dry rotted, and just fell off. I got the bushings from the help things in a variety pack as mentioned, and somehow got a set on the bolt, but they just did'nt seem to fit My ranger correctly. An old school chum of Mine managed the parts department at a dealership, and suggested ordering the pins with the bushings installed from them. I did, and the problem was solved. The doors shut tight and sealed good. If I remember the cost was'nt bad at all for OEM, and they had them on hand/in stock at the time. I don't know If they are the same, but they looked alot Like the ones On My f-150 that I have now, so possible they still carry them. I think I may have even switched them out to My f-150 before getting rid of the ranger. Can't remember If I used the whole striker, or used the help bushing I had left over on them, but looks Like I did use the new bolts. I just know know if the bushings are different or not, and can't remember which I used. I do remember someone wrapped electrical tape round the pins several times on My f150 as a quick fix LOL. I'm sure that worked for maybe to shuts of the doors before digging down to the pin.

You could get them out of a junkyard If you get lucky and find a good set. Newer years may fit, so possible to find a good set I suppose, but when I considered the low cost of the new set it just made more since in My case.

I have'nt used the full Help striker bolts though, so they may work fine. I just used a mix bushing kit that said It included ford bushings, and like I mentioned before that was for My ranger not the f-150, and I may have changed that part when I switched trucks. It is the same color material as the help bush.'s, just not positive though if the factory strikers I bought had that same color originally also.

The problem I had installing the bushings in the ranger was the only pair in the pack that fit the ID, did not fit the OD because It was too large. I Have lathes I could have easily turned them down to size on now, but at the time I did'nt have those yet (heck I could easily make the things from raw material Now days). I was able to get the washers Off, but can't say that's the case for all of them. Would'nt recomend any of this even if possible with yours, but I may have screwed them off the bolt, pressed it through the threads somehow, or they may have simply just been a set that the washers were'nt locked in place on, because I have seen some that sure don't seem like they would come off without cutting or ripping the threads out.

Wish I could be of more help, but My suggestion would be to avoid the hassle, and switch the whole bolt also. For the cost It was money well spent In My case.

Is the nut captured, or will it fall off into neverland when you remove the striker bolt?

They cost less that $10. at advance auto.
Scribe a line around the old washer and line the new one up with the line.
