sounds like a problem with the valve body. is it an automatic a4ld tranny? was it a rebuilt tranny that was put in there or one out of the junkyard? i had a similar problem on a mustang a while back.ended up replacing the entire valve body, and that took care of it

If you had a shop rebuild the tranny, there should be some warranty on it. I would take it back to have it looked at. Or if you got it from a wrecking yard and put it in yourself, then you might try what 72ford suggested. Otherwise it may need rebuilt.

has the filter been changed? if not try that first/if you drop the valve body,be really careful, watch how it comes out because it can be tricky going back in..when taking the valve body apart, look for the springs and shutter valves real closely as they can fall out and then you will have no idea where it was..just don't be in a rush while doing it,i have made that mistake a time or two
