do a search on VSS... "vehicle speed sensor" you may get lucky and have this $26 part (at NAPA) failing you. if not, you're going to have to take it to auto zone (scans codes for free), a tranny shop (scans for $0-$75), or the stealership (scans for $75+). normally an indication of the VSS malfunctioning is the speedometer not working properly in addition to the flashing OD light and rough shifts. my '97 2wd's tranny went at 150k and it had the same symptoms as yours. i tried the VSS, but unfortunately my was problem was much larger than that.... $650 for a used 20k tranny out of the junkyard. install was not fun but i did it. truck runs flawlessly now.
I had the blinking overdrive off condition once when I drove on a very hilly highway for about 60 miles. My transmission was constantly shifting in and out of overdrive. About 10 miles before my destination I got the blinking condition and noticed that the transmission was shifting rough. When I got to my destination I shut off the Expy and two hours later upon our departure everything was fine again. On the way home on the same stetch of road, I kept the overdrive off. This happened about 2.5 years ago and I have not had a problem since with the exception of a broken modulator spring in the transmission.
Thanks guys for your help. I went to a Transmision Expert and he determine was the converter clutch. Change the Converter Clutch and problem resolve, I feel the shifting so smoth and confortable. Thanks again.
