transmission cooler?

97 F350 RC LB 4X4 7.3L E40D

I know these trucks have an external cooler, but do they also have an internal cooler in the radiator? I am replaceing the trans and i will put a new external cooler on it, but do i need to have the thing flushed?

Thanks

yes, there's an internal cooler. some folks bypass it when they add an external monster. that's ok unless you're sitting in a 2-hour traffic jam.

Or backing a trailer. The air to oil cooler out front doesn't get any airflow in reverse, so it's almost useless when backing a trailer.

Keep the cooler in the radiator. It's there for a reason.

If you replace the stock cooler and bypass the in-rad cooler it will take forever to get the tranny up to operating temperature, especially if you drive short trips or live in the colder climates. LEave the in-rad cooler hooked up or Get a cooler with a thermostat (thermal break). Trannys need to run hotter than 120 degrees IMO.

I agree, do you think I should switch over to synthetic oil now?

Synthetic (Mercon- compatible) trans juice is a good thing. I run Mobil 1; about 50k miles per change, double what I run dinosaur oil. Syn handles the heat better. I also use 1-1/2 bottles of red LubeGuard per tranny change.
