Temp gauge reading help

I have a 1979 F150 with a 300 6 cy 4spd 4x4. It over heated, and steamed all over. The radiator was rebuilt and the thermostat replaced. Before it was rebuilt the temp guage would go to hot, right when I started the truck then cool only slightly. Now the guage starts all the way to the left when I start the truck , it slowly moves the the right toward hot to the A letter on NORMAL then moves back down to the M or R area on NORMAL. Is this ok or is it running hot, or should it be toward the N or O ? MY old truck a 1978 with a 400 always ran at the N or O.

Sounds like it's exactly where it should be-it will go slightly higher when you first start it, until the thermostat opens and lets the cold coolant into the engine, that's when you see it drop.
