Now that it has gotten cold (below 20 degrees) my truck will lope on startup. I always start it in the stock setting on the truck, and let it get good and warm before I flip it to a different tune. Sometimes it will lope for 4-5 seconds and then catch on all cylinders, sometimes it won't. If I shut it off and re-start it, sometimes it will work, sometimes not-any thoughts?
it normal for a cold start up. plug in the block heater and use either rotella 5w40 sythetic or rotella dino 10W30 just for the winter and it will go away.
Yes, Rotella 5w40 synthetic will cure the problem.. My 99 has loped every morning (& it is parked in garage) since it was new until I switched to Shell synthetic a year ago. Has not loped since...
It is because the oil is too thick on startup. The pump cannot push the oil fast enough and the hoses become more of a restriction to the higher viscosity fluid, and it "romps" a few times until the pressure is built up in the heads. Note that this is different from a loping idle.
Sounds good-I have 15-40 Rotella in right now, but the temps dropped fast on us up here. I think I will go to 10-30, but thinking maybe synthetic as well. Sounds like the loping doesn't hurt anything, that was my main concern. Thanks
30w oil is not supposed to be used in the Powerstroke, or diesels in general. The loads on the crankshaft and connecting rods are too great to be supported by a thinner 30w oil. Stick to 40w oil, and also with 30W oil you will experience some rough idling due to oil aeration because of the HEUI oil system.
Wow, that is news to me. I ran Rotella 10-30 last winter, and ran it for years in my 92 7.3. After doing a search, there are lots of guys switching to the 10-30 diesel oil in the winter-I will do some more searching
Im doing an oil change this weekend. This is my first oil change in our diesel. Our truck didnt come with the owners manual but i went on Alldata and found it takes ASE 15W40 Super heavy Duty oil, It takes 15 quarts Incuding 2 quarts in the filter. Use to be a 5.4 Guy so all this 15 quarts is gonna hit the wallet lol. So should i run what alldata says? Or any of you guys Perfer any brand? Should i do a different Weight oil??

sorry but i also disagree with your info. I ran 10w30 rotella in my truck last year also and it performed flawlessly. !0w30 is a recommend oil weight for powerstrokes during winter (30 or lower) and it provides great start ups and good performance with no airation. While 5w40 is just as good of choice it is also almost 4 times more expensive for me.
My owners manual states in a chart on page 23 that is OK to use 10W30 oil up to expected temperatures of 90 degrees maximum.. The chart also shows that 10W40 can be used from 30 degrees and up pass 100 and over. And whatever oil you use, it must conform to API Service categories CG-4/SH.. ( it must have both) or higher..like CF-4/SJ.. Personally, i really like Shell Synethic 5w40.

I was at school waiting for dismissal when my teacher came over and read my response. He agreed with what i wrote and he also told me to add the part about the 30w oil. I did not write that from my previous knowledge, he told me to include that. He is certified 7.3 mechanic by International so he knows what he is talking about. I didn't know it but i assumed he was correct.
kris i don't doupt your instructor knowledge but if ford says 10W30 is good then i will use it. they are the ones that will need to warrantee the engine if its fries. i too am a certified mechanic not by IH but certified all the same and i detected to driveability issues using 10w30 in my 95. I ran it 4k from nov. to april.
